Here's the list so far:

Ruth
Gehrig
DiMaggio
Mantle
Munson
Jackson
Mattingly
Jeter

I really want to put Berra in there, but then who should I swap out? and where does Yogi fit chronologically. I realize I'm leaving a ton of worthy canidates out, but I really need to keep this to (*edit, just realized I can do 9) or I'm going to be hating myself doing all those sketches.

Here's what I'm planning to do so you know the method to my madness. I bought a bunch of the 'You Sketch it Cards' from Topps series 2 off ebay. I want to do a Yankees passing the torch type series. 8 cards maximum. Each card will depict 2 players chronologically as they've been the face of the franchise. For example, card 1: Ruth/Gehrig, card 2: Gehrig/DiMaggio, card 3: DiMaggio/Mantle, etc. If they were ever to make it into packs, each card would be a cool piece, but putting them all together would tell the whole story.

Anyway, I really appreciate all the help and would still love to hear more suggestions on where to insert Berra or if I should change my list at all.

What about Randy "I'm scared" Winn?

He is the face of Yankee total failure.

Thank you very much!

Anyone have any changes they'd make to this list if you could only do 9 total? Would anyone change any of these names?

Sure, Rivera over Munson in a nano-second. This list is pretty locked up with that change, IMO.

I would still make Maris and Mantle as one sketch. Instead of doing one big Mantle, do both of the M&M boys. They were BOTH such huge part of not only baseball history but Yankee Folklore as well.

Rizzuto = voice of the Yankees, maybe along with Shepard

For me I should know what that face looks like in order to be the face of the Yanks, maybe the average fan as well.

Berra HAS to be on this list.

Possibly Rizzuto

Yeah, it's gotta be 9 players since 9 is a "baseball number". And these players.

Ruth
Mantle
DiMaggio
Gehrig
Jackson
Berra
Jeter
Rivera
Mattingly

One would be very hard-pressed to argue against this list as the "All-Time Face of the Yankees Players". The only other player I feel is even a possibility is Whitey Ford, and he still just doesn't fit.

Who's DiMaggio?

I'm kidding of course. I don't really see how you can argue against any of the guys in that list.

The problem with Rivera and/or Maris is that it's not a list of the 9 best Yankees ever, but rather, chronologically, who was the one guy that was the face of the team during various Yankee eras. The list is not set in stone though and I still could be swayed and make some changes :D Perhaps if this series works out w/o pitchers. Then I could do a similar Yankees pitchers series.

I'm of the opinion that there can only be one face at any given time. To me, starting with 1920, the list would look something like this:
1920s: Babe Ruth
1930s: Lou Gehrig
1940s: Joe DiMaggio
1950s: Mickey Mantle
1960s: Mickey Mantle
1970s: Thurman Munson
1980s: Don Mattingly
1990s: Derek Jeter
2000s: Derek Jeter

Besides maybe Babe Ruth and possibly Lou Gehrig, Mariano Rivera is really the only Yankee to ever be considered the hands-down best ever at his position. You can't keep a "best ever" guy off that list, that would be insane. Plus 5 World Series rings? How many was Munson a part of. Munson is not even close to being a top-9 Yankee if you ask me.

I think 90's player has to be Bernie Williams. But it would be hard to put him on the list. And 70's isn't Jackson? Really?

With the exception of Ruth, all the guys here were lifelong Yankees. But Reggie easilyl > Thurman from late '70s-early '80s, plus Thurman passed in the '70s.

The one change I'm still considering at this point would be to omit Munson and add Rivera just before Jeter.

If I ever do a pitcher's series then Mo would be included there and left off this list.

I think because Jackson is in the Hall as a Yankee he should count. He was by far the face of 1970's Yankee baseball, even if it was only for a handful of years.

Reggie is a great player, but there's a lot of people, myself included, who don't view him as a "true Yankee."
