Nothing against Saints fans, but the actual chant started with the Bengals.

Who dat has been a popular phrase in Louisiana and the New Orleans area since the 1800's. So the actual phrase did start in New Orleans. As far as the chant goes, the Bengals began using the Who Dey chant in 1981. It really took off as playoff time approached and the local brewing company Hudepohl put out beer cans that said Hu-Dey.

In the late 1970's (around 1979) Patterson High School in Louisiana was using the Who Dat chant. It was also adopted and used at LSU games. It wasn't until 1983 when a song was made that the New Orleans Saints actually started using Who Dat as a chant. They ripped it off from a high school and LSU.

So, in the end, the Bengals chant came before the Saints. The Who Dat chant was around before the Who Dey chant, but the Saints weren't using it until after the Bengals were using the Who Dey chant.

Most of you will not care and will pass by this, but it is fun. Just because **** asses can't say "Who's that" doesn't mean the Saints were using the chant first. They weren't the first to use a similar chant in the NFL and they weren't even the first to use the chant in their own state.

Although I wouldn't consider something from the 1800's as "ebonics".

Any way you swing it, it's a degenerative improper language.

For shizzle.

What is a "**** ass"

It's a kind of term for a cajun southerner...watch "the waterboy" and the coach in the overalls that speaks jibberish, that would be an example...most people call everyone from Louisianna this. It's kinda like calling someone a redneck in a way.

very very interesting muskies...i'm from te south and a Saints fan from birth (80's were torture, so i've been loving the past several seasons), but i did not know this bit o' trivia. thanks for sharing.
...and just a bit off topic, but i see that you live in pace. i recenty moved from pensacola to new jersey. i've not missed every saints game except for MNF...it has been brutal! i had the shakes and twitches for the first few sundays, i was detoxing from watching.

I thought that people like that were just Cajun...or is "**** ass" a slang for Cajun as well?

Don't be that guy Dalton...don't be that guy. It also does appear that it is in fact a slur. I've actually never heard it before.

"Don't be that guy" is just an expression. Umm...it's like saying "People are thinking something, don't be that guy who has to point it out". Something like that.

it is a slur, but i have several friends from new orleans, baton rouge and they explain it as a "redneck" type name. those guys that told me this could really care less about the slur...they see it as more of a joke, but whatever

Ah.

So if a Yankee like me walks into a bar in Louisiana and calls someone a coonass then i'm losing teeth, but a more playful term amongst you fellow southerners?
