He would get consideration as one of the worst MVP candidates. Anyone who has struck out nearly 170 times and isn't hitting about .270 doesn't belong in the MVP race, regardless of his other gaudy offensive numbers.

For what its worth its interesting that Verlander and Bautista are tied for first in WAR at 8.6 with Ellsbury pretty far behind at #3 at 7.3.

I made this same argument last year about Miguel Cabrera, but I'll do it again for Verlander right now.



Verlander has been here all year. He has been dominant, and has carried the Tigers every time he has stepped onto the mound. He has taken it to a whole new level the last couple months with his 12 straight wins in 12 straight starts, but he has been pitching like this all season.

Ellsbury had a rough April, got his head on straight in May and June, and really started to turn it up for the last three months. It's great that he's helping his team win down the stretch and his numbers are clearly some of the best in baseball. But what a lot of people fail to remember is that games won and lost in April count just as much as games won and lost in late September. He didn't help his team win at all in APril, and wasn't all that spectacular in May or June either. So for about half the season, Ellsbury was a below average/average player. Then he started playing like an MVP in July, and that has carried all the way into late September. But should he be rewarded with the MVP award for half a season? Remember, it's the MVP award for the 2011 SEASON, not the MVP award for the second half of 2011.

I'll iterate that Verlander has been dominant all year.

Now, one could still argue that a pitcher doesn't deserve the MVP; although I completely disagree if he clearly has been the most valuable player to his team in the league, which Verlander very clearly has been this year.

I'm usually in the camp that a pitcher has their own award, but Verlander has had such an amazing season that it is hard not to give him consideration. And for that reason alone he would get my vote.
