There is no easy pick for the next face of baseball. There is no one currently who stands out like Jeter has. Even though people hate the Yankees and even Jeter himself, they recognize him as the prominent figure in the game.

I can't say the same for anyone else in baseball right now. There are many candidates, but only time will tell if someone steps up.

There aren't even 20,000 Rays fans who will go see Longoria on any given night, why would he become a league favorite? unecessary rays jab

I'm gunna go out and say that no current player will emerge as the next Jeter. No player has the casual fan following that Jeter has, and not to mention Jeter has had exposure to non baseball fans by appearing in non-sports media as well. Pujols/Longoria/Hamilton and similar caliber players are well-known among die-hard fans & people with baseball knowledge, but most of my friends who are casual fans have no clue who any of these guys are. Yet, they all know who Derek Jeter is.

Edit: I should point out that I mean that no player will be the next Jeter in terms of popularity, as the "Fan favorite". There will some guys that are more liked by fans than others, but none to the level of Jeter, and I doubt there will be a single player that can clearly take the title.

not "next year"...i am suggesting who will be by 2020...maybe your answer will be the same, but I just wanted to clarify.

The thing with Jeter is that he is an American Icon, not only just a baseball icon. People who know nothing about baseball, still know who he is. A lot of this has to do with him being 1. A Yankee 2. A winner 3. A charismatic person. I seriously doubt that there will be a player like him for a long time to come. He is kind of like DiMaggio in a sense that DiMaggio was bigger than the game. He was an Icon. I really dont see anyone around right now who has that transcendant quality in them.

Half of Jeter's fame comes from that he has played for one team his whole career.

Mauer will play for the Twins his whole career, he has a similar public "nice guy" persona to Jeter, and he plays on higher level than Jeter ever has.

I say Mauer.

But he plays for the Minnestota Twins. He doesnt, and never will, get the national attention that someone who plays for championship teams in New York gets.

I think it's always been the guy who best represents the game in the purest form of how it is supposed to be played and who stands out as a model to all about how to conduct yourself professionally on and off the field. The guy who does it best ends up being the poster child for the sport. Make no mistake about it, someone will replace Jeter after he retires, but we probably still have a few more years to go until that happens. In that time, there are lots of guys that can emerge. I do really think Dustin Pedroia could be the guy. There's nothing not to love about him. He conducts himself well day in and day out, always plays hard and fair and is a positive role model in a major market.

Ripken was the man for many years, which I think was forgotten in the original post too! I think Griffey took it over from him and Jeter from Griffey.

On a higher level, yes. But at a higher level, no. Which I think has a lot to do with this question.

Who will emerge to take over Jeter's spot as next decade's MOST OVERRATED PLAYER ??

Beats me????? You clowns in NY make that decision, we just shake out heads :)

Rizzuto - hit over .284 only 2 times in his 13 seasons
Mantle - 4 seasons with 100+ RBI in 18 seasons, over 28 2Bs only 1 time in career.
Maris - 2 great seasons, 1 good season, highest season average was .283
Munson - Hit over 18 HRs only once in his career, 113 total.
Mattingly - hit over 18 HRs only once in last 8 years, played only 14 seasons with 222 HRs.
Jeter - Has not led the league in any offensive category in 11 years (Led in runs 1 time and hits 1 time in late 1990s)

Evan Longoria is pretty popular and pretty good.

Josh Hamilton is a fan favorite because of his story, and he has quickly become one of the best in the game.

Miguel Cabrera is the best hitter in the game other than maybe Pujols, but the alcohol incident in late 09 took too much fan favor from him. It was blown out of proportion, but regardless, the damage was done.

Longoria or Heyward

Long shot Joe Mauer. Seriously what is not to like about him?

Longoria is already in a ton of commercials and is getting exposure that way

The perosn would need to win a major award or win the world series and host SNL or date a real famous actress/model

What about elvis? If texas can make the playoffs for the next couple years and elvis can grab a few gold gloves/stolen base awards, he might be able to become the one. He is also very young so he has lots of time to do so.
