I would have said Stras before his arm fell off. It will be tough to come close to Griffey's popularity, at least in terms of card collecting. Griffey came up at the pinnacle of collecting, had a lot of hype going in, sweet swing, consistently hammered the ball, HR derby and All-Star performances, HR battle of '98, iconic rookie card... I do think Heyward could eventually provide similar production at the plate. Heyward will also benefit from a larger market than Griffey. If Harper delivers as advertised he will be extremely popular provided his head doesn't get too big.

The thing that none of these players have those is the celebrity that Jeter has. Yes, they are all great players. Jeter is bigger than baseball. Jeter is on the list of Athletes, such as Lebron, Kobe, Tiger Woods, Lance Armstrong. The last baseball player like that was Mantle, and before him DiMaggio. Yes, there will be someone once Jeter is gone who will take over as the face of baseball, but there is no one who can replace him. That is gonna take generations. Alex Rodriguez is the only guy who comes close to Jeters celebrity, but his image is tarnished.

The thing with Jeter is that he is an American Icon, not only just a baseball icon. People who know nothing about baseball, still know who he is. A lot of this has to do with him being 1. A Yankee 2. A winner 3. A charismatic person. I seriously doubt that there will be a player like him for a long time to come. He is kind of like DiMaggio in a sense that DiMaggio was bigger than the game. He was an Icon. I really dont see anyone around right now who has that transcendant quality in them.

Hahaha thats one of the funniest statements in this thread. Comparing players pre 70's to now with players of this era make no sense to do. Game and country was very different and they had second jobs in the off season. Jeter can never be an Icon like Dimaggio was in all honesty. Pinstripes add about 75% to Jeters name recognition in all honesty. If he played elsewhere that popularity wouldnt be there.

Half of Jeter's fame comes from that he has played for one team his whole career.

Mauer will play for the Twins his whole career, he has a similar public "nice guy" persona to Jeter, and he plays on higher level than Jeter ever has.

How is that funny? Im comparing how they were both cultural icons, not just baseball icons. And DiMaggio did not work in the off season, some of the players had to work, not all of them. I agree, the fact that he is a Yankee has a tremendous amount to do with it, as I stated in what I wrote.

Those are sports where an individual can dominate more than in baseball. Also, those teams win. If the twins could win a few World Series than its possible.

I think he has one of the largest player collector followings out of all the players who have debuted since 2000, along side Ichiro. Since Ichiro is much older than Longo, Evan will carry on the torch for Jeter, despite the continued plummeting of baseball's popularity in America.

I don't think you can find a larger player collector contingent than Longoria for a player who has debuted since 2002, especially at this young an age.

As far as a Huge Fan Favorite I think Troy Tulowitzki has an outside shot. As for Icon I dont see anyone soon although I can see Pujols getting that title Late in his Career (When he get to 500 HR or Close to 3000 Hits) or if Pujols pulls out a Triple Crown I could see him instantly get the "Icon" Title.

Maybe. The problem I see with Cano is he's currently being overshadowed by Jeter, Arod, Mariano, etc. I think the next Jeter will come when the Yankees have had a few off years and this new young Yankee star will bring back playoff/winning/world champion baseball. This "new Jeter" will be by far and away the best player on the Yankees and will be the talk of the town. It may not happen for a decade or two, but the Yankees have shown throught their history that it will happen eventually.
