In my opinion, the next Jeter will happen when the Yankees get a young player that develops into an allstar and wins multiple championships all while wearing pinstripes, throw in a single digit jersey number as well.

Jeter is who he is because of the Yankees, he's a hall of famer on any other team but he's not nearly as big as he is without the Yankees. Think about any current all star and how much bigger they would be if they were on the Yankees. Yes, Jeter has won which does everything for his career but he did not single handedly win those championships, the whole team did.

Cano maybe?
I think that if Cano were from the United States he would have a chance, but I think him being Latin really hurts him. Unfortunately.

The thing with Hamilton, Pujols, Mauer, etc, etc is, yes, they are great players. But outside of Baseball, or sports fans, who really knows about them? That is the thing with Jeter, everyone knows who he is. He is a celebrity.

I do not think it is someone whom we can justify now. I do not think Jeter is the face of baseball or anything simply because he chooses to to comercial upon commercial. That is in no way a knock on him, he is a future hall of famer hands down. I am from the south, have been my whole life except college, and he is not as well known or respected here as most might think. Only time will tell. Most members will probably pick someone from their favorite team which is a biased decision. Truth is, i do not think there will ever be a "face of baseball" or a "generations favorite player". No one really ever has and no one ever really will. Griffey was up there, so was Mantle, Ruth, and Cobb.

Just my opinion.

Nice to see someone else thought of Troy. I think he has a shot, if the Rockies become the team of the decade.

Josh Hamilton could be, if he stays clean and healthy. I haven't seen anyone mention Buster Posey yet, but I think he might be a dark horse (next few years will tell).

As far as a Huge Fan Favorite I think Troy Tulowitzki has an outside shot. As for Icon I dont see anyone soon although I can see Pujols getting that title Late in his Career (When he get to 500 HR or Close to 3000 Hits) or if Pujols pulls out a Triple Crown I could see him instantly get the "Icon" Title.

Derek Jeter is THE face of baseball. If you ask somebody who knows nothing about baseball who their favorite player is, they will say something like "I don't know... I can only think of one person who plays baseball, Derek Jeter."

He is very famous, even outside of commercials. He hosted Saturday Night Live. He was on the Biggest Loser. He was on Seinfeld. People who don't care about sports know who he is. He is THE face of baseball.

I asked my girlfriend if she knows who Derek Jeter is.

She had no clue.

There goes that theory

No one is claiming everyone knows who Derek Jeter is, jsut that plenty of non basebll fans know who he is. Your girlfriend not knowing who he is means nothing

I am not a Yankees fan.

Jeter is an icon, and he is the face of baseball. And it's not even close. If you don't think so, then it's most likely because your hatred of the Yankees has skewed your opinion.

Here is an article from this summer about baseball's most marketable players: http://www.sportsbusinessdaily.com/article/140771

As far as who will emerge as the next face of baseball, I don't think it will be a pitcher. I think it will be someone young, in their first 5 seasons. I think it will be someone who has performed at a high level already, who has gone to the playoffs.

I think the candidates are Ryan Braun, Joey Votto, and Evan Longoria. Andre Ethier is a dark horse candidate, as he benefits further by playing for the Dodgers. I think Jason Heyward has a good shot as well, but with only one season under his belt, it's a bit premature to think he could reach those levels.

It kind of disproves elmalo's claim

Cobb, no. Wagner was more beloved as was Christy Mathewson.
Joe DiMaggio was basically the face of the United States when he was playing and I honestly think that Jeter comes the closest to DiMaggio. He has been the face of one of the most popular sports franchises in the world for the last fifteen years, is the shortstop of that team, in the biggest market. He has won worlds championships. Has the adoration of his peers. He is class. He is the standard of consistency and getting it done. And believe me, I am not a big Jeter fan. But it is hard to deny what he has meant to the sport of baseball, and the sporting world in general over his career.

I asked my wife who has never watched a baseball game or has ever set foot on united states soil what baseball players she has ever heard of. She said Derek Jeter, Alex Rodriguez and Edgar Renteria.

When I asked my wife to name 5 current baseball players she came up with Jeter, Arod, Manny, Ichiro, and it took her a minute then she said randy johnson..when i told her he was retired, after a couple more minutes she came up with PEavy.

My wife hates baseball.

I just asked her to name the 5 most famous current players

She said

Barry Bonds (fail),

Derek Jeter

Arod,

I stopped her there, point was made. She thanked me.

I think its obvious he's a cultural icon. You can argue that he shouldn't be all you want, but he's easily part of our cultural subconcious whether you like it or not.

There are too many past and possible future problems with Hamilton which scare off companies looking for a spokeman.

We all know his horrible past, loaded with violence, heavy near death drug use and many failures. Not exactly something companies like thier spokespeople to have.

And before someone says "its in the past", its not, he lives with it every day and every second poses a risk of falling off the wagon. Way too risky for a company.

If Granderson was a superstar, hed get my vote, that dude can speak with the best of them.

Lastly, whoever said Munson and Mantle were over rated, seriously? You do understand why Munson "only" had 113 HRs correct? And I wont even mention anything about Mantle, the numbers SCREAM for themselves.

Yeah, it baffles me that someone could say that Mickey Mantle was overrated.
I cant wait to pick up that new book about him.

I think Jeter will be the face of baseball long after he retires.

Hmm...

It has to be someone young now (max 25 now). Someone who's good, and who will stick around for a while. He has to be good; not necessarily 3500+ hit potential good a la Jeter, but good. Being personable, well spoken and good looking don't hurt, either.

At this point, I agree that Longoria is the front runner. Could be Posey as well, though I haven't seen him interviewed much.

Someone said Bryce Harper. From all accounts, he's a first class *******.

Just for fun, asked my wife to name 5 baseball players. Background: she has little to no interest in sports, is 29, and we live in Toronto. Her response:

Manny
Bonds
Halladay
ARod
Guerrero

Odd mix. I said "what about Jeter?" She said, "he looks like a muppet; why would I name the muppet. Besides, he's only good 'cause he's a Yankee, right?"

Apropos of nothing, by the way.....

I'm not sure Longoria has the star personality outside of baseball. There's nothing celebrity like about his personal life at this point. Also, not to sound like a jerk, but I doubt it will be a foreign born player. Nothing against them, but it seems people don't relate as well with foreign guys no matter how great they are at baseball.

That said. I think we are going into a pitching dominate decade. So I'm going out on a limb and saying Strasburg comes back fine, and becomes the star. He has a more likable personality than Harper. Who I would guess would otherwise be the star.
