Wonder if the could have done a ten pack box with 4 cards a pack and one auto for $100?

Obviously filled with parallels and inserts.

So, what would each of you do if you were the brand manager at Topps for this product?

My configuration would be:

Hobby Box:
12 Packs per box, 4 cards per pack
60 player checklist - current players only
Each Base card has 25 patterns
Gold Refractor #/25 1 per box
Cracked Ice Refractor #/50 2 per box
Tek 1/1 Buybacks - 1 of each player's card in 1998-2000 sets (just 1 per player, not 1 per pattern)
Autos - 1:60 packs
$99 SRP

#ThanksTopps now I wont be buying any of this. Whoever came up with the idea to put these out like this should be fired. I may try to get some singles depending on who is in it.

If I was in charge:

10 packs/ 4 cards a pack
$100 srp
1 auto a box (needed in today's market)

There would have to be a nice amount of parallels (but not what topps is now planning) and inserts to help justify cost to customers considering there's only one auto and no gu.

My break down might not sound appealing to people who don't know the product, but once they see how awesome they look and how they sell, they would change their minds.

What topps is planning now smells of the designer having no clue what Tek is really all about.

Sorry guys, it's my fault. I bought some crappy Gwynn card from Leaf or Panini with airbrushed, head cut off and had a "limited" print... Obviously Topps was watching that auction and said, "Hey, people buy crap! Let's keep it going!"

Where are they getting these cards for the "buybacks"? We can't even find cards of our players 15+ years later.

***CONTENT HIGHLIGHTS:
- Each box will feature:
-6 Base Cards
-1 Parallel base card #'ed to 99 or less
-1 On-Card Autograph
- Each Case Guarantees: 1 re-created design diffractor or Buyback Autograph.
- Topps Tek, the brand that collectors came to know and love in the late 1990s and early 2000s, returns from its hiatus as revamped and invigorated 2014 Topps High Tek! This year's Topps High Tek release will feature a sampling of the old and a multitude of new offerings.

Looking at my order form,
SRP will be around $75 a pack

Rather disappointing so far. I'll still reserve final judgement after seeing some in hand. If the cards are gorgeous, there's enough collectors to buy it. And yeah if those box prices are accurate it stinks. Could secondary sales average $10/card? Maybe in 20 years. I'm all for base cards that have value, not so sure Topps is going to pull it off though

Not yet but I still assume you're safe other than perhaps a buy back auto

The problem I have is this "we'll insert a slew of parallels into a product to add value" crap isn't working. The added value isn't real. If I can buy every Bagwell card from gypsy queen (minus 1/1's and the wood #'d to /5 that that odd seller from Hong Kong sold three times in a row) for under $20, there is no real value added to the product with these inserts.

Yeah, if you try to put a parallel set together, it'll add up and cost a small fortune. But you're not pulling a ton of parallels in each box or case. And these days, the luster of a parallel has worn thin with most of us anyways. It's old hat. So are autos. I say keep them but if adding just a few here or there, or making the set impossible to complete is your goal, why bother at all?

And at $75 a pack/box? Ha! So $75 for six base cards and a $15-$20 auto? Oh, and one or two parallels from a parallel set nobody can complete? This is a bad idea for sellers or collectors to bust.

I'm not pre ordering it, just like I didn't pre order museum (utter trash) or tier one.

Hopefully it won't skyrocket if others follow suit, like gq did some years ago.

Now, OVER FORTY PERCENT of topps traditionally issued baseball cards have an Srp of $50-$500 a PACK! An increase from last year. How does this help and bring more collectors in?

And just to get pissed even more, here's an article from right after topps was awarded exclusive license:

By making the deal, MLB is expressing optimism in Topps' ability to appeal to a new generation of young collectors under the watch of Michael Eisner, the former president of the Angels, who acquired the cardmaker in 2007.

"Generations of baseball fans have grown more connected to the game through collecting baseball cards," Commissioner Bud Selig said. "We look forward to partnering with Topps to restore baseball cards as the game's premier collectable."

The exclusive arrangement ends MLB's 30-year relationship with Upper Deck, the other main player in the market -- which retains licensing rights from the MLB Players Association. That enables Upper Deck to continue producing cards with players' images -- but team logos and such are out.

Eisner hailed the deal with MLB, earlier telling The New York Times, "This is redirecting the entire category toward kids. Topps has been making cards for 60 years, the last 30 in a nonexclusive world that has caused confusion to the kid who walks into a ... hobby store. It's also been difficult to promote cards as unique and original.

"We're going to be very aggressive in letting retailers, kids and hobbyists know that we are the card that represents it all."

"There is a greater chance of organizing the marketplace with a singular partner," said Tim Brosnan, MLB's executive vice president for business. "It's a business that's critically important to our mission, to make players icons to kids."

What a bunch of bullXXXX!!!!!!!!!!!!!
