Why do people get upset when other people get a steal?

The above reasoning is based on buying a card knowing there are collectors for it and upping the price x3 claiming you are helping them out offering a card that is hard to find. Some might like it but I don't. I don't care how bad I want/need it, that automatically turned me off.

Yeah but how many times do people tell you what they got the card for? I'm okay with that I suppose. My thing is...don't tell someone you can only pay a small amount for a card when you know damn good and well you'll triple your money. Be a damn man and tell them you can move it but tell them your top price. If everyone is cool...good deal. Hell...half the time dealers help each other out, especially if what they have isn't moving for them personally.

I noticed this with comic books. I had so many key issues, knew what they were worth and knew that a comic shop would pay me a low amount for them. They have to get things cheap enough to make it worth their while, plus they are helping you expedite the selling process. But don't tell me you can give me only $30 for an Incredible Hulk 181 that would grade out around a 6-7. Or $200 for an X-Men #1 graded 4.0. And just like at my local shops for cards...don't tell me you can only give me $50 for an Andre Johnson auto'd football(authentic none the less) when the damn ball cost me twice that. Don't tell me crap like that. It's different if you say you are willing only to pay that price. But when you tell me you have to have it at that price to move it...you're insulting my intelligence.

The only time I've ever had a problem with sellers flipping cards to player collectors is in those instances when I was 1st underbidder to them on eBay and they outbid me (and every other Thomas collector) for the card.

Hate to tell you dudes (that do that), but you just paid top dollar for the item. I'm not going to pay you more for it just because you outbid me to extort more funds from me.

In the end, it's market control and price fixing. Some flippers will purchase cards just to insure the value of said card remains high on the historical record...even if it means not selling it. I won't purchase from sellers like that, even if it means not getting a card I want.

That said, if a seller found a $100 card for $10 and sells it to me for $100 (meaning, I'm willing to buy it), good on them for being on their game. That's how I fund my collection. I don't go around posting my steals for a reason, but I'm not going to compete with other collectors at auction just to drive the prices up to astronomical ranges.

I agree wholeheartedly. I know some here bid things up because they have a lot invested in it. I don't agree with it but whatever. If you've got money to burn, be my guest. I just saw a Bagwell auto go for $37ish when I paid around $125 for it two or three years ago. It really sucked but I didn't touch it because I'm worried only about what I need, not what I have.

I personally like when members offer to sell or trade Padres to me from the 90's thread. It only helps me out with my collection. I don't see the logic in not inviting that.

That is what PM's and the trade/selling forum is for. Fortunately not everyone is using that thread to pimp cards they want to sell, but it is quite annoying to most whether they say it or not.
I mostly always email or PM member on items myself rather thn posting them in a thread, and I dont really ever brag about any prices whether high or low

You are not one of the people I am referring to. I have always enjoyed your posts. You are actually the last person people would think about when referring to people pimping cards to sell.

What's wrong with people selling cards on here? You know that's a big part of sports card forums right? I'm starting to think your I.Q. level is very low or you're just a nerdy kid that doesn't get much sun light.

He wouldn't share that info with a card shop owner. To boot, everyone here knows Machado is a big name but if asked, I couldn't give a decent answer about the price any of his cards go for. But I'd be able to tell you if it's low enough, the price would be good. Make sense?

Does anyone really believe that guy's story that he was dealing with a card shop owner? Guy changed his story pretty quickly once he realized how much he was going to get massacred. He knew exactly what that card was worth, and deliberately lied to a flea market seller to get a steal. It would be same problem if the roles were reversed, and it was a seller who was trying to sell junk cards at inflated prices to a buyer that didn't necessarily know what they were looking at. Yes, you should know what it is that you're looking at, but a lack of knowledge doesn't excuse flat-out lying.

Collectors naturally do not like the idea of flippers mostly because it increases the cost of the hobby for other collectors.

Many real collectors also don't like flipping steals because it makes the hobby more about $ than cards... because certainly not all flippers are collectors, and definitely many flippers do not reinvest all/most of the profit back into their collection.

Collectors love seeing other collectors getting PC steals and rightfully so. A PC steal = growing collection which is what the hobby is about.

This hobby is about money and only money. Card companies put out release after release to do one thing, make money. Collecting, trading, and flipping all revolve around a price guide or recent sales that put values every card, and like the stock market, shifts prices up and down regularly. If the hobby isn't about money why do we care what a card is worth?

I flip to reinvest into my PC. It is too easy to make money prospecting to not take advantage of it.

I can Honestly say I enjoy and Love My Collection, and Could Care less about its Value, I look at it as entertainment. and with any kind of entertainment you need to spend some money

Some people have a sense of fairness that extends to all buyers and sellers having equal knowledge on all sides of a transaction. If someone buys or sells a card for something way out of whatever the range of market value is, that person might be turned off to the hobby and the last thing we need is fewer collectors. I don't have a problem with someone, especially a dealer, losing out on some dollars because they aren't aware of up to the second pricing. If I'm in a shop or show and someone behind the counter opens a pack with a $50 card and I ask how much he wants for it and he says $5, I have no problem paying $5 for it. They have enough leverage when buying from a non-dealer. O eBay, everyone is a dealer. If you not search out what a card is selling for and price it accordingly, that's on you. If someone posts a $50 card with a $5 BIN because they don't know what they have, they obviously were happy with getting $5 for it, so who cares if they left $45 on the table? Well, some people are if they see that. Can't say they are wrong, it's just a point of view I don't understand

If I was in this for the money, then I certainly wouldn't have a John Lackey collection.

So true. I recently hit a BIN for $129 for a 2010 TTT Steal Kings booklet 1/3. I saved about $150+

Glad you picked that one up Ken! I happened to be on when it was listed, but just didn't have the funds. I was hoping another Rickey collector had snagged it!

Also I never expect deals for cards of the player I collect. If I do get hooked up obviously I would be happier, but I never expect to or get mad if I don't.

I overpay for everything because it stays in my PC so I don't care. Yeah I know, I am doing it wrong but for every steal there is me overpaying for something that I really want so it all evens out.

Personally, I'm not a big fan of the transactions page. It's all new stuff. Now, if there were a "90s inserts transactions page", then that could change my view.
