After watching a game last week, this is why I cant stand todays baseball players...

1. They almost never run out a ground ball...Hell, most jog to first...

2. They show off after hitting a home run

3. Todays pitchers cant go more that 7 innings or god forbid there arm with fall off

4. I cant stand when the bring in a guy from the bullpen, have him throw one damn pitch, then bring in another guy...If the starting pitcher cant face the best hitter, he shouldnt be pitching in the MLB

5. I cant stand todays ballparks

More coming.

The last three have nothing to do with the players and everything to do with the financial side of the game.

I'm sure a lot of pitchers would be fine going 125 pitches. Unfortunately, when you invest 80 million into a pitcher, it makes sense to protect your investment. LOOGYs are around because they help teams win at a cheaper price.

I don't think you can hate on baseball because it's grown into a massive industry.

In addition to the above post, do we know that 1 and 2 are any different for today's players vs. yesterday's?

Because back then, players played for the love of the game...Not because of the money

THIS is hilarious

It's always been about money, don't kid yourself.

the $ figures may have been less but it was still about the money and a better life than what they would have had. Even though owners had much more control over salaries back then, major leaguers were still playing to get paid.

Everyone want's to do something that they're really good at -- the money just makes that easier. Right now, it's more about *money* because 99.99% of these players couldn't be making more money elsewhere.

Back in the day, when baseball players made similar salaries to Mr. Manual Labour, an argument could be made that it wasn't just about the money.

Everyone wants to make a lot of money doing something they enjoy. It's never just been about the love of the game, or the money associated with it.

It's always been the perfect synergy of making a great living doing something you love. Obviously, the pendulum's really starting to swing though...

Many of them were playing because they loved the game...

the same could be said about today's players. while the $ paid to player's today is absurd, player's in the old days still made much more than the avg american worker.

Really? I just sorta assumed baseball was the same as hockey & football.

Back in the 1850s, it wasnt all about the $$$

No, my team didnt lose...Yet

I think you meant 1950s, unless you're talking REAL old school ball.

Either way, it was just as much about the money then as it is today. Just with smaller salaries. Basic human nature hasn't changed in the last 60 years. Heck, it hasn't changed in the last 600 years.

Even if they didn't make huge salaries, most of the players were still playing for the paycheck. They might have been working square jobs in the offseason, but there's no way that the majority of them were trying to play for free (no pay, no fringe benefits).

I'm sorry but if you are playing 162 games, traveling insane amounts, and in the spotlight, then you have to have passion for the game. There are certain professions where one must have large amounts of dedication. Anyone can flip a burger or work a cash register, but it takes a lot to persue being a doctor or teacher or engineer, etc.

I hate when players don't run it out, I called out Freeman the other day before he was hurt for practically walking halfway up the first baseline on a ground out. I always run the basepaths hard and not quit.

Come now gilmo...

Sure, it's always been for the money on the owners side, but are you going to sit here and tell me the dock workers playing for $12 a day food per diem were in it for the money? I'll save you the time to answer. No. From the games conception up until the 20's, it was about the love of the game for all but a select few who actually made a living. And without actual dates being given by the op, I'll assume this is what he was refering about. Now if he were comparing now to the 70's, than I agree with you. But to make the assumption this was his refrence, I think is fruitless.

EDIT: Jusr read the whole post and I'm shocked at how many people actually think this game was about money back then... Again, perhaps it was to a SELECT FEW, but to throw that label over all of baseball and it's players is a discrace to it's legacy.
