Yeah, you can always get a loss if you start, leave the game losing, your team doesn't ever regain the lead, and don't pitch into the 6th. You can't get a win though, only a loss. It happens A LOT.

Yes it usually happens when you get shelled early
Very RARE to go 2 or less as the starter and lose with
only 1 run on the board Especially because your relievers got
hacked

What's so unbelievable? He was the pitcher of record when his team gave up the lead for good. The official scorer never gets to decide which pitcher takes the loss, only occasionally the pitcher who gets the win (when the starter leaves with the lead, but pitches fewer than five innings). You commonly see this: a starting pitcher does well but leaves with a one or two run defecit, only to have the subsequent reliever get hammered. The starting pitcher still takes the loss, as happened here.

Wasn't there a pitcher who won a game last year without throwing a pitch? (I think a runner was caught stealing). A week or two ago another pitcher got the lost after pitching less than one inning (Minny?, left due to injury). Dems the breaks.

He went 1-1/3 innings, 7 hits, 6 runs, 6 earned Runs 1 Walk 0 Strikeouts and got the lose in the rain shorted game 7 innings.

Funny note
The game one rout of the Mets was the 7th time this season that the Cubs had scored at least 8 runs. They are 0-7 after tonight’s loss in the game following.

The Cubs have scored 5 runs or more in an inning nine times – that’s tops in the majors.
