Yesterday, I was able to take a day off, and after months of consideration I dumped my entire collection of 20,000+ cards to the local shop. And, aside from my Gooden collection stashed away and out of sight, I have only 2 cards left. I'm just not in to prospecting, busting wax, sorting and such anymore. They were taking up space and I resented looking forward to closet treasure hunting as I once adored!

Needless to say, I am very content right now and am planning to take a very long time thinking on if and how i will refocus my collecting habbit(s). I still enjoy the hobby, but for now, it will be lived through you guys and the time I will still spend here. At 35 years old, I think I may have just outgrew it. I just do not get pleasure out of actually collecting anymore. I still love to talk cards, and stay current within the hobby, but just lost interest in the buying, selling, collecting aspect.

Back to the selling, how's this for a good shop owner....

I walked in tuesday around 12 noon and told him I wanted to move some unwanted material. He has a open door policy and literally buys everything for a reasonable price, from anyone! Knowing this, and knowing he was going to take it all, I started to unload in his shop. Once done, we began to riffle through them to give him an idea as to what there is there, value wise. After about five minutes, I said to him, "I really do not want to waist time." You see what kind of stuff is here and I just want to get rid of it. Give me X ammount of dollars and it's yours." He looks at me and says "are you nuts? Just from what I've seen, its 2 to 3 times that!" So he insisted on giving me 3x what I asked for, and even threw in a freebie, which is now one of only 2 non gooden cards in my collection..

So thats it... No more cards for me, for now.

Oh, want to know what my last 2 cards are?

What the freebie was??

The only card I kept besided my Gooden collection is a Lou Brock RC and the freebie was a BGS 8.5 Arod SP RC. With some of the funds I went and bought a Fender Strat and Amp. Gonna spend some free time learning to jam! Anyway, thanks for reading this long winded post. Just wanted to share my change of life, and how great a local shop owner I have.

Thanks, Ron.

Could you maybe post this a few more times? I don't think 3 is enough
But to answer your question, I haven't totally dumped everything and started over but close to it. I think it's a great idea. Starting over gives the excitement of a new endeavor and it gives you a chance to try something you haven't already tried. I would keep anything that's deeply meaningful to you, but otherwise I think starting over is a good idea.

I try to turn my entire collection, except for any PC at the time, every few months. I just get tired of looking at the same cards. So I just do a show and blow them out and start all over again.

i've begun to feel the same way... outside of my bagwell pc of course... my plan is just to stash everything away in the attic and when the times comes pull everything back out for my future kids to enjoy.

I understand the need to sell at 35 though, as i would do the same right now if i was that age.

Good luck with the guitar, i currently have one collecting dust that i need to practice on...

I'm planning on moving most of my prospect collection through ebay over the next 6 months. I've acumulated a lot of low end cards and such over the past 3-5 years being in HS/College and having a very small budget. Im hoping to start to buy a few nicer cards of 09 draft when it comes out

Finnigans sports cards on RT5 in Albany NY.

He also sells on the beckett market place.

He is the nicest, most honest dealer I ever met!

And he has the sickest collection/inventory ever amassed!!

He just purchased a near full run of every tops set from '52 on up last week! Including some NM-MT late 50's and 60's sets!

I did the same, but on the bay.

I almost did the attic thing but decided to pocket some cash.

I'll probablly regret it 10 years from now..

Yeah, thats a tough one!

I remember when I first started to sell on the bay, I was getting 50% - 70% of going rate on everything I sold just because of my low feedback number. It really did not start to level out till' after 100 sales, and now with 500+/- and still 100% with high star ratings, I tend to get a bit more tham most. You have to start somewhere though.

My advice is to sell off the low end first to build up the score before unloading the good ones. It will put much more money in your pocket!
