Not sure if this was mentioned here as I can't read through 15 pages now, but here are some thoughts on the 1B umpire, Jerry Crawford, from Keith Law.

... it's time MLB took a more serious look at Tuesday's first base ump and crew chief, Jerry Crawford.

This is Crawford’s second major incident of the month, after Friday’s egregious blown call and subsequent outburst against Arizona manager A.J. Hinch... [Tossing Porcello] was incompetence at best and cowing to a hostile Fenway crowd at worst. Crawford’s involvement in two on-field blowups, both featuring bad umpiring decisions, calls into question his fitness to umpire major league games, especially ones with playoff implications like Tuesday’s.

A number of fans here in AZ, including myself, are pretty pissed at the way this ump acted in last week's game. He was out of line, visibly bumped Hinch a number of times, and then went off on the dugout, and specifically Dan Haren, after Haren asked him why Hinch was thrown out (asked him calmly, I might add). Crawford did nothing to calm the situation, and it seems like a similar incident occurred in Boston last night (though I haven't actually seen it yet). Time to review this guy Bud!

I saw the start of this article but am not a subscriber so I was hoping someone would post more of it. It's completely true, the Boston crowd was chanting "throw him out" after youk was long gone and porcello's fate was being decided.

In reality, there's no way he should have been tossed. He did nothing wrong. Intentional or not, the umps hadn't even warned either team yet. Youkilis flat out charged the mound because he can't control his emotions (as usual) and didn't like the inside pitch. So Porcello gets thrown out of the game for hitting a batter because youkilis loses his temper (like always) and charges the mound, making a much bigger deal out of the situation.

If he had just trotted to first (which he seems to be unable to do when he gets hit, he always has to cry and whine like a little girl), neither player would have been ejected and that probably would have been the end of the whole throwing at each other situation between these two teams.

But yes, this article is spot on. Porcello was unfairly tossed. Just look at his reaction and look at the situation. He's got a 3-0 lead in a game the Tigers need to win to keep some room between them and the ChiSox in the division race, why would he be intentionally throwing at someone when he's trying to win a ballgame?

Even Tigers fans said he threw at Martinez, so what do you mean "why would he be intentionally throwing at someone?" Also, he threw at someone and missed and on the next batter he plunks him in the middle of the back on the first pitch? I know you're extremely biased in the issue, and maybe I am too, but come on. Was he or wasn't he throwing at people? Stick to a story.

Pretty ridiculous question given that he threw at Victor the inning before.

I'm not sure whether I think it was intentional or not, I'm just summarizing what that article was saying, which was that there certainly was good reason for Porcello to NOT be purposely trying to hit someone.

But my own opinion is that the pitch that hit youkilis looked a lot more intentional than the one that was inside on Martinez. I mean seriously, pitchers throw inside. It happens. If Martinez hadn't stuck his hand out as if to say "why are you throwing at me", would everyone still think it looked like Porcello was trying to hit him? And again, if youkilis hadn't charged the mound, wouldn't the whole thing probably have been over?

Likewise, if the exact same situation had happened with any team but the Red Sox or Yankees would anyone care?

ha good point. I would, just because my guy put someone on the ground which just solidifies him even more as my favorite player, but most people probably would not.

Exactly, fans of the two teams or players involved would care, but other than that probably not. This isn't the first time we've seen someone hit a batter, it isn't the first time we've seen someone charge the mound, and it isn't the first time the guy charging has taken his lumps. But because it is the Red Sox who have a large number of fans that either love or hate them, it's a bigger deal than it needs to be.

Youk got pissed, charged the mound, and got dropped. I don't think it warrants a discussion on if you should or should not retaliate hitting batters or if you should ever charge the mound. Youk made a fool of himself, and will get suspended. Porcello came out looking tougher, and got ejected for appearing to throw at two batters in a row and being part of a brawl. I'm ready to move on.

Thanked.

You could not be more right.

Youk and Fernando Vina are/were the biggest babies I'd ever seen when they get hit.

Then we found out Vina was intentionally doing it.

Porcello and Youk both got 5 games. Edwin Jackson was fined an undisclosed amount.

Have a link?

If this is true though, I'm disappointed in the way MLB handled this. Even though it only means either one or zero starts away from Porcello, how does he get the same penalty as youkilis who was FAR more out of line than Porcello?

I disagreed with tossing Porcello, but I could see the reasoning behind it (the second consecutive batter being thrown inside, too, etc.)
I absolutely disagree even more with Porcello being suspended. That's a joke. Youk's might get knocked back to 3, which, given context, is where it should be. But Porcello should maybe get a fine for berating an umpire, and it should end there.

Here's the problem with both sides of this argument - people don't have a common context. Sox haters want him to take his base, and that's it. Sox followers know this is the 37th HBP in 3 seasons, which is Jason Kendall-esque, and the 3rd in a week. Add the wussification of sports, and you have what happened.

Should he shut up and take his base? Sure. In this age of "we must overreact to everything", is it that out of line that he didn't? No.

There is no right for this argument. Just use it as a platform to praise or blast either side, and let's move on. There's no way this thread deserves 16 pages (even though I just contributed to it...)

I might be suspended for typing this but Youkilis is a Jew despite his "Greek God of walks" nickname and the commissioner Bud Selig is also Jewish. Porcello is a non-Jewish "gentile" of Italian heritage to my knowledge so he was punished more than he should have been likely because they couldn't give the Jew a longer suspension though Youkilis deserved it. All Porcello was doing was reacting in self defense in my view.

The mod can ban me if you feel that what I posted is too controversial or whatever but I'm not afraid to post what I believe if I feel that I'm right. I have nothing against Jews and I just stated the reason why I believe that they received equal suspensions because I know that Jews tend to stick together.

I guess we'll find out for sure if Ryan Braun charges the mound tonight.
Is it too hard to go with the fact that Selig and Watson are idiots? That's the theory I always fall back on.

To Tomlinson21RB, whatever. I call it like I see it. There is no way that Porcello also deserves 5 games just for acting in self-defense and you should also admit that regardless of what you are. Was he supposed to just stand there and let himself get tackled?

No, the 5 game suspension isn't deserved but to say it's because Youk is jewish is one of the dumbest things I've ever read on the internet.

Religion has nothing to do with this.
