I think the Yankees believe they will get every foreign star. The fact is that most of them are more used to winning titles and not being postseason disappointments.

Well, Irabu and Igawa worked out so well for the Yanks that they'd be silly not to win a bidding war for his services.

Matsui worked out well. Maybe they can make it a 50/50 thang.

I guess they shouldn't sign any white pitchers either, cause look how well the Kevin Brown and AJ Burnett deals have worked out. Or Cuban pitchers, since Jose Contreras didn't work out. Or skinny guys, since Randy Johnson and Jeff Weaver didn't have great runs. Give me a break.

All I know is that Tuffy Rhodes can go to Japan and be their greatest slugger. It tells me that it's a far inferior league to MLB. Sure, there are some guys that are difference makers like Nomo, Ichiro and Matsui, but the only pitcher to be a difference maker from this league is Nomo and he only provided two dominant years and two good years. The rest of his career was mediocre or worse. I guess I'll wait for you to show me how the Japanese league has a history of developing ace caliber starting pitchers that would justify paying huge money for Darvish.

My entire problem with signing Darvish is that it will cost too much money. I'd give Darvish good money to pitch for my team, but I wouldn't pay him crazy money, which is what I think it is going to take. My argument isn't that Darvish will stink, but rather that paying him "ace money" is crazy because you have no idea whether he can be an elite MLB starter. You read his scouting reports, looks at his stats in an inferior league, and think that $17-$20 million per year for the guy is a good idea. I disagree because the league is littered with pitchers that have "elite" stuff who don't quite put it together. When that happens, you end up paying a guy like AJ Burnett based on "potential" rather than performance. That sort of decision is what you think constitutes a smart baseball move with Darvish. I think that history has shown that you are probably wrong.

The sample size is miniscule. Darvish has absolutely dominated the NPB - his career ERA is lower than Daisuke ever put up in even his best season there. Just because he hasn't proved it in the majors doesn't mean you can't make a smart decision by signing him. Shoot, by that logic, you'd have passed on Matt Moore a couple of months ago, because hey, he hadn't pitched in the majors. If Moore was a free agent today you better believe he's getting $80M+. No reason Darvish shouldn't get the same. Is he worth $20M? Probably not, very few pitchers are. Is he worth $12-15M? I'd say so. Honestly I'd rather have him than Sabathia for the next six years. Especially since CC will cost more.
