So if Girardi was managing the Twins' they would have won?

It's all about the rosters and talent. Managers mean very little in baseball, its mostly about the players on the field.

The Twins not being able to compete with the Yankees had more to do with Morneau being out than Gardenhire being a poor manager. A small market team like the Twins cannot afford to lose their second best player and expect to compete with a team with deep pockets and a deep roster.

Just curious, but do you honestly believe that?

Joe Torre is the best example of what he's talking about. So-so manager with the Mets, Braves and Cardinals--all teams with mediocre talent. Goes to the Yankees and you know the rest. Goes to the Dodgers, and things look like the Mets/Braves/Cardinals days. There are those who do not think Torre is a genious, but got lucky working for the Yankees when he did. If Gardy was managing the Yankees, would he still be a poor post season manager? I'm not anti-Torre (or Yankees, really) but I'm just sayin'.

How much of an impact do "good" managers make versus "bad managers" if given the same team?

Managers probably don't make much impact towards winning a specific game, but they sure can contribute a bunch to losing a specific game.

I do believe managers can make a difference over a longer time frame with the tone they set in the clubhouse, managing personalities, etc. But even that impact is probably overstated.

Not totally true. I somewhat agree with the post that some one said about Torre. He was on the right team at the right time. He had a talented bunch of kids that made his job easier.

However, managers make game winning or losing decisions each and every inning. That's what make a good manager or a bad one.

Gardenheir is not the reason the Twins lost, and neither is the fact that Morneau was out. Morneau would have helped, but the Yankees have a far better team the the Twins. Plain and simple. If the Twins were in the AL East where would they finish? How many Twins would be in the Yankees everyday line up? 2 maybe 3? The Yankees are just a better team.

And the Twins are more a mid market team than a small market team. They have a brand new stadium and #13 in payroll.
