So you want them to trade away big contracts to take on an even bigger contract while trading multiple stars and top prospects? Hm. I'm willing to bet that there is no player in baseball who would warrant a bigger haul in terms of players than Felix. And that would mean trading at least one of our top prospects in Barnes, Bradley, and/or Boegarts....I'd rather the Sox sign or trade for a pitcher who wouldn't deplete their farm system.

Their rotation at the start of next season is Lester, Buchholz, Lackey, Doubront, and Morales. That might change if they sign a pitcher....I can see them signing a free agent to a 2 year deal, maybe a Lohse or similar? So really there is no 'need' for a starting pitcher, but they will lack the depth that they had this season. But possibly not with these young arms we have been trading for...(Zach Stewart might crack the starting rotation if he has a good spring training)

I wanted that to happen before all this went down.

Plus they will have the kid from this trade with the Dodgers that they say has the chance to be a top of the line starter, De La Rosa.

Crawford has 3 team no-trade list. As luck would have it, #dodgers are 1 of 3. As of few minutes ago he was yet to be asked

Lester and Ellsbury have also been placed on waivers. Could see more moves for Sox in their house cleaning.

I normally facepalm myself reading MLB traderumors comments, but this one had me in stitches:

"The dodgers probably said, "this deal isn't happening unless Nick Punto is included"."

Sad to see Rubby go hes a great guy! Check him out with his glove..

Lester is not going anywhere, and I don't think Ellsbury trade talks will start until the offseason.

Never know, maybe they get a good offer for them. If they weren't going to even entertain offers for them, they wouldn't have wasted time putting them on waivers.

I don't think anyone is off limits. I really think this team needs a total overhaul. Just read that Ace is pissed because he didn't get in the 9th. After last night he didn't deserve to be a thought to pitch a close game! This is the worst team since the 01 season.

Be honest when you woke up this morning did you think Gonzo would not be on this team by the end of the weekend?

Back to the good ole' 'wait til next year' Sox.....I love it.
This is the first year in a while they have been building for the future. Theo didn't know how to do that, and we are paying for it now. And I'm not saying they are going to be playoff contenders next year, just that in a few years our pitching staff is going to be real solid. Sox fans found out the hard way this year that pitching wins games.

Hell no! haha

After Baileys solid save tonight Aceves is out of the closer role. Thank god. He has been awful this year, just awful. He can go back to his long relief role....when we are losing.

I don't want Lester to be traded....I know he has had an off year but he is the ace of this staff and it would be silly to trade him. Hypothetically if we did trade him.....who would it be for? Wouldn't be a pitcher because it would undoubtily be a downgrade so I dunno. I just don't want Buchholz to be the only pitcher on the staff who can go 7+ innings every start, you know what I'm saying?

As a Red Sox fan, I like this trade. Sad to see Agon go, but I certainly won't miss Beckett or Punto. Crawford is just a big question mark at this point.

Also pretty happy the Sox got some nice pieces back. Loney is just a holdover but Webster could be good.

Some other thoughts:
Thank you, Phillies, for not handing Lee to LA which would've made this deal impossible.
Sorry, Shane Victorino, who gets to play out this season knowing there's a 0% chance he gets resigned by LA no matter how well he plays.
Don't see Sox getting in on Hamilton. Maybe a guy like Napoli. Colby Lewis. Lohse. Trade for VMart. Lots of possibilities.
Without the world of expectations and distractions, 2013 Sox will be enjoyable to watch even if not a playoff caliber team.

I just don't get it. Whoever goes the Dodgers....are you REBUILDING or are you just dumping salary? If the latter, then this is one of the worst trades in the history of baseball and nothing else can be said of it....

If the former...what the hell for? There is only one Red Sox that needs to leave...and his last name is Beckett.

Obviously they were not going to get rid of Beckett without also giving up Gonzalez.

Is this move a salary dump or sending signals to the players about who is running this team?

I think it's a combo of salary dump and trying to start from square one without the burden if ridiculously large contracts. As a Sox fan, I'm all for this.
