some of the free agents next year

David Wright
Robinson Cano
Curtis Granderson
Brian McCann

Ortiz is a free agent as well if I remember correctly.. I wouldn't doubt seeing Middlebrooks play 1st if this trade happens until they either sign or trade for another first baseman.

Ellsbury can be healthy long term, assuming he doesn't get run into by teammates or fallen on by second basemen.

He is not a power hitter, but his value is in his legs. His speed alone is worth a decent contract and he is easily one of the best leadoff hitters in baseball. I don't think he will get offered a Gonzalez-esque contract but I can see the Sox offering 5yrs/$85million. I wouldn't be surprised if he doesn't work out a deal....but I guarantee they make him a solid offer especially if they free up a ton of $ from this trade. If he wants more than $100mil then he might have to find another team because the Sox have Bradley waiting in their wings and I don't see him playing corner OF.

First of all, no way he signs for only 5 years. Boras will be pushing for 7-8 years. He will also be saying that Ellsbury can put up better numbers than Crawford who got 20 million a year. I like Ells as a Sox fan, but unless he ditches Boras or doesn't take his advice, I can't see him signing for any less than 6-8 years at close to 20 million a year. Just not worth it my opinion.

Ortiz is far from a lock resigning. Sox are already giving twice going rate of DH to him this year. If he takes 8-10 mil one year deal he will be back. I doubt another team comes close to that #.

So watching the overpaid loser team was fun??? these guys sucked and acted entitled all year. Everybody has been wanting them to clean house. They needed to do this. I'm stunned Dodgers want this salary and these guys. I'm shocked.
Ellsbury doesn't want to be here in Boston. He has made that pretty clear. Heck he didn't even want to be around the team last year. He already has made it know his contract starts at what Crawford got. He thinks he is getting 6 yr 140++ mil. No way Sox even consider it. He still probably wouldn't even take Sox offer just so he can get out of town. Some team might give him something close. Why do you want a player who doesn't want to be here????

I agree, no way he is on this team next year.

I was hoping a Ells, Lester, mid-level prospect for King Felix would work.

Ron, there's something to be said about clubhouse chemistry, though. The Giants obviously have it (not that the otherworldly pitching staff doesn't help!). I am "forced" to watch the Giants darn near every night, and it's obvious to me that these guys really enjoy playing together. They also have a hugely supportive fan base, and I believe that goes a long way with those guys.

Time will tell if the Dodgers can make this huge player turnover count with a little over a month to go.

I agree the Giants seem to play well as a team. My hope for the Giants chances at winning the division is that the Dodgers new editions contribute as poorly as they did in Boston and don't mesh well with Kemp and the other Dodger stars.

Middlebrooks has never played a game at first in his pro career, can't see it happening. He needs to play third to continue to improve on his defense.

However, I can see Salty playing first base, Lavarnway catching, and call up one of our catching prospects.

Pre-Game tonight, Salty was at first base.

My only problem is that Lavarnway is just not ready yet, offensively.

So, if the white sox trade Crawford, GOnzo, Beckett, and ellsbury (as some are requesting), your team is less talented than the Orioles. Where do they go from here? And I would suggest laying off the pipe dream of Josh Hamilton.

They were less talented with them. At least now they are less talented and 280 million dollar off the books now. They rebuild and make hope to make better FA decisions.

I disagree. He just needs a full season at the ML level to show what he's got. It would be silly to send him back to the minors where he has been for 5 years now. He has mashed at every level and now he should be full-time player. Don't let the small sample size on the Sox this season fool you.

He also was awarded best defensive Internation League catcher so that is a plus.

The M's are not trading Felix. Period. They are looking to sign him to an extension.

Yeah no problem with his defense or how he calls a game, but just looks lost at the plate right now. Not saying he won't hit but unless we do get a big FA or two next year, where is the offense going to come from?

I've enjoyed Ciriacos hitting this year. One of the bright spots for sure.

Like I said, hoping!
So you want them to trade away big contracts to take on an even bigger contract while trading multiple stars and top prospects? Hm. I'm willing to bet that there is no player in baseball who would warrant a bigger haul in terms of players than Felix. And that would mean trading at least one of our top prospects in Barnes, Bradley, and/or Boegarts....I'd rather the Sox sign or trade for a pitcher who wouldn't deplete their farm system.

Their rotation at the start of next season is Lester, Buchholz, Lackey, Doubront, and Morales. That might change if they sign a pitcher....I can see them signing a free agent to a 2 year deal, maybe a Lohse or similar? So really there is no 'need' for a starting pitcher, but they will lack the depth that they had this season. But possibly not with these young arms we have been trading for...(Zach Stewart might crack the starting rotation if he has a good spring training)

The lack of production/ lack of winning just proves, for the 4.6 billionth time, that $ doesn't buy championships. It only potentially helps a team win .

Well, it helps if they sign the right players. Win some/lose some. I'm just glad the Epstein era is over...because all of these trades this year would not have happened. It's nice to see them actually building for the future for once. Now I am really looking forward to watching this team the next several years.
