Rivera should have come out in the bottom of the 9th inning, whether it's 3-0 or 18-0. Just plain stupid to come out in the 8th inning as Rivera made his living as a CLOSER, not a setup man. In the bottom 9th, Rivera would get the standing O's and cheers still and it would be a save situation or he would close out the game in a non-save situation depending on if the AL cashes in right now in the top9th.

And if the NL scored 3 runs in the bottom of the 8th off Nathan and the AL doesn't score in the top of the 9th, what would you have said?

pitch the 9th inning and be in line to earn the win - it's not the only time the Yanks ran him out there in a tie game in the 9th. considering the NL could have tied or won things in the bot8th scenario, my thought has changed to more like 2 outs 8th inning so he could get the four-out save (again, not new territory for him, he could have done it in about 20 pitches) or have his one out appearance to close out the AL's pitching line if the NL did take the lead in bot8th and saved it in the 9th.

Im sorry but how in the hell did Rivera deserve to be MVP? Team was already up a few runs. Its not like he came into a tough situation and got out of the inning. He wasnt even the best pitcher on his team last night. So stupid just like the voting process of the whole game.

Yeah. I was trying to explain to people that it was to make 100% sure that Rivera got a chance to pitch. Had the NL managed to pull off a miracle rally if someone else pitched the bottom of the 8th and pulled out 4 runs. Then there would have been no bottom of the 9th if the AL didn't score in the top of the 9th.

I didn't mind Rivera getting the MVP.

Chris Sale would have been the only other guy to get it IMO, or Prince Fielder for that AMAZING triple he had (lol).

There wouldn't BE a 9th inning b/c the NL would have won the game. Do you see what Leyland did? He GUARANTEED Mo would be in the game. He was worried the NL would come back off another reliever and be winning after the top of the 9th, effectively ending the game and giving Rivera NO SHOT to pitch.

I'm sorry but I'm not sure how you aren't understanding this.

He had a team full of All-Stars, he honestly didn't have faith that one of the remaining pitchers would be able to hold a 3 run lead?

Please note, I understand why he did it...but Rivera should have closed the game out, even if he had to come in the game in the 8th.

He did not need to do this to guarantee Mo get in the game. As long as they were in the lead he could have pitched the 9th. And they could have let someone else start the 8th and if he gave up the lead they could have had Mo pitch the end of the 8th. I assume he wanted to guarantee Mo got his own inning..
