So, I sent in 25 cards to SGC including these Mays cards and I'll include a couple of 80s into the "vintage" if you don't mind.
Both Mays I bought raw hoping for a 4 & 6... got the grades you see so I'm happy there.
The Bo Jackson was in a BGS 9 holder... took it out, sent it to SGC... same grade. Happy there as well and it looks better in the SGC holder anyways.
The other are all pack pulled myself. Nothing huge but overall happy.

The black holder does make the borders look especially crisp. If I had one suggestion, it is the giant grade numbers. They look too big compared to the rest of the text on the label, but I guess that is what is most important to many, the grade.

It is a bit disappointing to think that Mantle and Mays had nearly identical career spans, played in the same market (at least initially) and played similar positions, yet Mantle is so much more loved, while Mays was a better player. I took a liking to Mays when I was younger and gathered some of his cards. I never really cared much for Mantle and only picked up a few cards of his. I later went back and filled in a lot of the mays gaps aI had for his basic cards, but not quite far enough, as I never got 51-53 cards of any type! That was a big mistake!!

Everyone loves the '84 Donruss Mattingly but personally I think the '84 Fleer is his best looking RC. Those two Mays are awesome. Gotta love well centered vintage.

I totally agree with you here. I will pick up a few Mantle cards down the road but Mays was such a better player. The love will come in time (even more so than today). Mantle is kind of a "face" for baseball in that era.... Mays not so much. However, I'm focused on getting all of Mays playing day "base" cards... here's my collection minus the 2 from SGC, the 66 Topps which I now own, and 2 incoming (55 Bowman & 58 Topps).
