I've got a question - What are you going to do about the Ted Williams card? Do signed copies exist?
I assume that signed copies have to be out there maybe not maybe not many but I intend to get as far I can get on this set then add unsigned cards to "complete" the set until a signed copy pops up, then I'll move on to another set while still seeking signed copies I need.

Sounds like a great plan man, best of luck. I'll be monitoring the thread, I'd love to see you track down a Splendid Splinter. That card autographed would be sick. I sold a really nice one recently (w/o an auto of course), probably a EXMT but it had a tiny thumbtack hole in it, and it went for over $400. Have you ever seen a signed one?

That's a heckuva nice signature for an 85 year old man! Congrats on 76% - I can't believe how far you've gotten! Are there any autos in this set that are unobtainable?[/quote]
As far as unobtainable goes I don't feel so, there are no Howie Fox type players in this set, that said there are a few that died in the 60's including Vern Bickford who passed in 1960 but eventually I feel I should come across pretty much every player in the set.

jeff550- The 59 set is well over 2 times bigger then the 54 Bowman set put would be a fun project to be done over a long period of time. My set originally was something I planned to do over 5-10 years then I got Mickey Mantle and went crazy. I know you go to Chantilly there are 2-3 dealers there in signed vintage who have binders full of these types of cards and with 100 dollars or so you could come home with a decent amount of deceased players. They way I recommend going about it is printing off a checklist, going through the list to see who is dead and who is alive then the living players figure out their ttm success ratio or keep an eye out for signings with them and knock off a dead player here or there. Chantilly would also be very good to buy unsigned commons to send out ttm instead of paying all the shipping charges from ebay.

Great work Talmer. Sorry the Piersall's didn't turn out as you hoped, but at least you were able to get him to sign.
Thanks Mark. I do have a PIRATE in the works, Preston Ward, even though he has stopped signing ttm I found someone who is working on getting a private signing done with him.

Damn...just sent out to Ward about a week ago hoping he might catch up on his mail at some point.

I got a nice one in today Vic Janowicz, he was Bo Jackson/Deion Sanders before they were born. Janowicz won the Heisman trophy in 1950 while playing at Ohio State. He played 2 seasons for the Pirates(Mark I got a Pirate!!!) as well as for the Washington Redskins. He was in a car accident in 1956 that left him partially paralyzed and ended his career. He passed away in 1996. This card ended up costing me $82 and brings me up to 172/225. Be on a look out for a large mailday this week!

Took ya long enough! That's a great looking card, though it went a lot higher than I would have expected.

Re: 1954 Bowman Autograph Set Thread *Updated 9/22* 80.4%!! Done

I got 9 in today some of them being very hard to find. Connie Marrero is 98 years old and has lived in Cuba sinced he retired from baseball, Fred Baczewski died in 1976 the rest of the players are all deceased minus Johnny Pesky who isn't a very good ttm signing at his old age. The lot all purchased from the same person cost me $400 but well worth knocking some very hard to find ones of my list and getting me over 80%. Now that I have Marrero it won't be much longer before I finish off all the living players. I do have 2 out through the mail and a few more in the works 85% here I come.
Earl Torgeson- died in 1990
Ken Raffensberger- died in 2002
Connie Marrero- 98 years old
Sandy Consuegra- died in 2005
Fred Baczewski- died in 1976
Bobby Adams- died in 1997
Sal Yvars- died in 2008
Cal Abrams- died in 1997
Johnny Pesky- 89 years old

Wow! You weren't kidding when you said you made a big purchase.

Always nice to see another Pirate represented :D Though I think there's only 4 or 5 Buccos in the set anyway.

VERY nice additions to your set. You're moving right along. Always good to get a bunch at one time at a set price. You're ahead of me on the Torgeson, as I only have him on an index card. I needed him for my 1961 Yankees set, as he played part of the year for them that year, though he wasn't on the World Series roster.

Wow man this is great. Congrats on all the progress you've made. I've tried several vintage signed sets (all in various stages of completion) and they're a bear. 54B is a great set.

Well done!! Pesky is a tremendous signer when you catch him at Fenway. Earlier this year, I got a photo of him as he was signing outside of Fenway. He sat by the players parking entrance and signed, took pics and hammed it up for everyone.

Good luck with your next acquisitions......

Re: 1954 Bowman Signed Set Thread *Updated 10/21* 83.1%!! Done

It's been almost a month since my last update, I got 6 more in today from the same person. Taking me up to 187/225. All 6 of these players are deceased Del Rice being the one that has been dead the longest passing in 1982. I have a few more in the works so hopefully I can have another update in a week or so.
