Adam Dunn might hit 600 HR, would he make the HOF?

But he WAS horrid last season, you can't just take away a poor year for the sake of your argument.

Reggie Jackson's ALL-STAR season in 1983 with the Angels: BA of .194, OPS of .630, 140 K in 397 at bats and 14 HR and 49 RBI - and he's a HOF

His 37% OBP ranks him 229 all-time.

Wow

I'm utterly amazed how great Dunn is. Thanks for opening my eyes.

Hank Aarons is .3739, 221 all time.
A guy with over 700 career HRs.

Ok, you are just trying to debate for arguments sake. There's no point in debating with you. Someone said he's a poor man's Dave Kingman and that's why I brought up his OBP. If you can't see why I did that, again, there's no point in debating it with you.

So you are saying that Reggie Jackson got in solely on his performance in the postseason? B/c Adam Dunn could very well have more HR, higher OBP, higher SLG, and of course higher OPS than Reggie when he retires.

It's not Adam Dunn's fault he didn't play for the Athletics and Yankees. of the 70's.
Those #'s only have one way to go the rest of his career.

If Dunn can win an MVP and lead the league in something OTHER than strikeouts, then I'll change my tune. But until then, he's another HR or whiff player. Name me a HOF hitter with as low a BA as Dunn has...

I still say Edgar Martinez should be in, but im in the minority there it seems

Amen Brother

21st all time OBP, .4178. Just ahead of Stan the Man and Pujols, and just behind Helton and Thomas.
7x AS (which doesn't mean sh!t to some of you)
2x AL batting champ

I don't do the AS voting but he did have 12 HRs the first half, so maybe that's what got him in.

It's higher but Harmon Killebrew wasn't much of a hitter other than the long ball....

I wouldn't be against Edgar making it in the HOF, but I can definitely see why he will possibly never make it in.

My point in posting that line was that Reggie Jackson is a HOF and had one of the worst offensive seasons in history as well. So if Dunn gets to 600 HR, no one is going to glare at his horrific season last year and say "oh look at that year, he's not getting in"

600 is 600. He's going to get in if he gets to 600. I could see him not being first ballot though.

Because currently Thome has 200 HR more than Dunn.

We're arguing future performance vs. career totals.

Yes but people are saying that even with 600 HR, Dunn doesn't get in. So again, if Thome can get consideration with 600 HR, why can't Dunn with 600?

You got me on that one! The worse batting avg of all HOFers was .262...Wait for it................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................... Ozzie Smith!

Killebrew led the league in HRs 6 times, RBIs 3.....has an MVP, with top 5 MVP voting 5 times. All that with a career OPS+ of 143 [comp to Dunns 127]. He was primarily a HR hitter but he does have a higher career BA/OBP/SLG/OPS than Dunn.

When Killebrew retired he was 5th all time in HRs. That's definitely HOF worthy. Is Dunn going to say the same? Probably not. Everyone hits HRs nowadays. Killebrew was the best power hitter in his era, you must think Dunn is the best power hitter in the league today, yea?

Dunn needs an MVP and to lead the league in HRs for a few seasons to even have a 'chance' at the HOF. Odds are, that's not gonna happen.

I think it was Killebrew.

As for Ozzie, he had one of the best gloves for his position. Dunn might end up having one of the worst of his. Therefore he has to do so much more with the bat to have a chance. HRs alone are not going to cut it.

If a player getting into the HOF relies so heavily on what other players did/did not do, they shouldn't be in the HOF since their record cannot speak for or stand on its own.

Markakis - Essentially it comes down to if Dunn reaches said milestone he is a HOFer. Is that # only 600HRs? what if he only makes it to 500HRs? Would he still be a HOFer in your eyes? What is the tipping point for the HOF bid?
