2:12pm: John Fay of the Cincinnati Enquirer jumps into the mix, tweeting that the two parties are talking, but the deal is yet to be signed and could be for as many as ten years.

With Volquez on the shelf they are in need of pitching....way too many unproven arms......Harang and Arroyo combine for 30+ losses each year and that is the better part of the rotation.

Don't see what Volquez or any immediate needs in the rotation have to do with this. Chapman shouldn't even sniff the majors in 2010. He's a project, and in my opinion, should be a reliever when it's all said and done. I'm just not impressed by him.

100 MPH, loose arm, projectable frame, nice feel for the curve.

Who are you impressed by, Brandon Marrow?

EDIT: No I don't think he's the second coming, but he's a potential ace.

Okay? I don't see what Morrow has to do with anything. I love how people are throwing around "100 MPH" as this magical attribute. Let's see how often he throws that hard in game situations as a starter. It's borderline irrelevant that he's capable of throwing 100...so can Joel Zumaya. So did Matt Anderson and Billy Koch. I'd need to see a little bit more of a refined product before I think it's worth the amount of money the Reds are going to be paying him.

We are paying Willy freakin' Taveras $4 million per...so, I think $5 million for a potential ace is a GREAT deal for a team like the Reds. If he shapes up, the Reds have one of the best (if not the best) young rotations in the game by 2011:

Cueto
Chapman
Volquez
Bailey
Leake

Dusty will make him a TJ candidate by the end of the season.

Am I the only one who thinks 30m/5yr is really cheap? I thought any of the big money teams could have easily paid double that.

So the Reds are the Yankees / Red Sox minor league team? He is what.. 21? So he gets his feet wet with the Reds... develops into a top notch pitcher and when he hits 26 the Yankees or Red Sox dish out $18-20M per. Win-Win for either team.

Looks as though it's actually $25M for 5 years, with an option for a 6th.

Wait, let me guess...........

He'll claim the Giants stack up better for the future, and he'd be right. Let Volquez start throwing before we assume he's 100% for 2011 (take a look at the year Liriano just had as a possiblility for what he may be when he gets back). Bailey just started showing flashes in the majors in the second half of '09 after getting crushed the past few years. He has plenty of time on his side, but I think it's fair to say he has plenty more to prove before he can be relied upon. Cueto has been very inconsistent, despite very good stuff. I think you're getting a tad carried away with a VERY raw group of arms. Upside does not equal success.
