Apparently Escobar wasn't getting along well with teammates and management. I hear he was a bit of a disturbance in the locker room via ESPN.
A team that's looking to win a division / a title does not want that on their team. If you've got a shot at winning, why not take the guy with 17 HR's and 50 RBI's? Gonzalez gives them a better shot to win THIS YEAR, that's why they did it.
If I was a Braves fan, I wouldn't be as outraged as these other fellas are.

I think the outrage is over the future. It's not like the Braves have anyone in their system who is going to step in at SS in the next few years.

Gonzalez is/was hitting out of his mind this year, and Escobar was hitting epically bad, so this was sell way low on Escobar and buy way high on Gonzalez. Besides, the Braves were already winning without any offense from SS. I understand the desire to avoid fading and make a strong playoff run this year, I just don't know that this move was necessary.

As a jays fan I like this. Escobar still has some upside and I think Toronto got rid of Gonzalez at his highest value.

I know they are trying to also unload John Buck and Overbay so hopefully AA can get some decent return on those guys. Although I really like what Buck has done for us this year!

This makes the 2007 Teixeira trade even worse for the Braves.

The Braves traded Elvis Andrus, Beau Jones, Neftali Feliz, Matt Harrison and Jarrod Saltalamacchia to the Texas Rangers for Ron Mahay and Mark Teixeira.

Then they traded Teixeira for Steve Marek and Casey Kotchman.

Then they traded Kotchman for Adam Laroche, who left as a free agent.

They could quite feasibly still have Andrus and Feliz on their roster right now.
