Big news this morning is that Matt Holliday has been traded for Brett Wallace, Clayton Mortensen, and another minor league outfielder.

If true, that would be a pretty nice haul for Beane considering Holliday sux AND is a free agent in a few months. At least Pujols will have a little more help.

That's not a weak group of prospects! Mortensen is probably a 3 or 4 starter and, well, Wallace.

What does this leave the A's offense with?

And Shane Peterson.

Clayton Mortensen? Noooooooooooooooooooooooo!

He was my favorite prospect. I had a big stash of him too.

I was really for this for Wallace, and anyone else not named Mortensen.

Hopefully this means that they'll sign him to an extension.

Yikes, not sure I would have given up Mortensen AND Peterson with Wallace, but I am guessing A's are eating a good portion of his contract, which I think would allow the Cardinals to resign him. Anyone heard anything as far as resigning Glaus????

Could be a pretty good lineup next year if they can keep DeRosa, Holliday, Glaus, and Ludwick...

...can someone provide a link that this is final yet?

It sounds like a done deal, but as far as I know it hasn't been finalized.

Wonder who the Cards' top prospect is now. Time for another poll.

Good point considerting Glaus dosent have anyone breathing down his neck for 3B right now. But i wonder if he can still handle the hot corner.

There are three outcomes for this trade
1: Win World Series
2: Resign Holliday
3: Find a new GM (assuming he wasn't pressured to do this)

Holliday does not suck.
I'm a big Wallace guy, but he is an AL style player.

Even with Holliday being a Boras client, I'm not sure why, the Cardinals, a team with a payroll that is usually around $100 million wouldn't be a decent fit for Holliday for both financial and on the field reasons.

As a Cardinals fan, it is hard not to be excited about a Holliday/Pujols/Ludwick combination....

Well the problem is Freese is basically ready, and you still have to find a place for Mather at some point.......I would hate to see Glaus go because he is a good bat in the lineup--may not have the power he used to but he is definitely a good gap/double type guy at the least. For $12/mil a year or whatever they are paying Glaus though, I think there are better options.

They still have plenty of them.....

if Miller signs it's him. If not it's Daryl Jones. Between the trade and performance/graduation the system is going to drop into the 20s IMO. Also, I think they still believe Freese can play 3B at the MLB level next year.

Why do the Cardinals need a new GM????

He is saying if they dont win the WS this year and do not sign Holliday long term, than the Cards got hosed in this deal and thus the GM would need to go.

Hm, really good point there. Incentive laden deal, for sure.

DeRosa could play 3rd next year though. I doubt Glaus + DeRosa will both be back. One has to play third, in my opinion. Although, Ankiel, is a free agent, so that leaves a spot. DeRosa could take Ankiel's spot next year as the 4th OF with added utility duties. So much versatility in DeRosa, and so many options overall. It'll be interesting to see how it plays out.
