I voted no, because it'll get tied up with "Who gets to possess the card?" and "What if I want to sell, now, and you want to hold it longer?"
Agreed.

Re: Contest with POLL $25 Paypal to winner! HUGE Card purchase

CardTarget did this a few years ago. They sold x number of shares at $10 each for a number of high dollar cards. They then let the market dictate what the shares went for, and some sold above IPO and some sold below. CT made a small percentage on each sale of shares, which helped pay for storage and insurance. If they had an opportunity to sell the card the community voted with each share being worth one vote. If sold, the money received from the sale was distributed depending on how many shares each person owned.

I believe what killed it was the cost of storage and insurance.

The only way this works is with a similar system where FCB makes money on trading shares to pay for the costs associated with running the program. Also, what's the point in paying for a share if they can't be actively bought/sold amongst other FCB members.

I like the idea as stock options for a larger purchase or mutual fund idea.

I think the obvious choice would be to buy lisu's Brandon Belt Super. We could help her out, own an iconic card, and keep it in the FCB family.

She said she wanted to sell at this point anyway.

If anyone feels like doing some light reading here is a blog I found where a group of guys were putting together a similar sports card portfolio.

http://www.classiccardboard.com/bscig/

I haven't dug in to the actual by-laws they have posted but this looks like a good resource to start with.

$25 was what I would be in for. I say, if Chris is able too, he should set it up, and then have a poll for everyone who bought in if he thinks it's time to sell. If the majority of the people agree with him, everyone should get the exact same % as what they put in, like stocks in a way.

Granted it would have to be planned out well before that would happen. Just my un-intelligent thoughts.

Hm, I am sure that something like this could potentially work. It's just like any other form of investing, there is not always agreement on how a company should proceed through various situations, but majority rules. In the case of a card portfolio, one bad apple could not cause much hindrance to the group...unless that bad apple is the one holding the cards. The likelihood of that happen is approximately 0.000000000001%.

I would be in for $25 or $50.

I voted $25...
There would have to be some rules set up prior.
As for selling you should put it to a vote. 60% of the owners say yes then move it.
Then it comes to do you get "paid" or do you reinvest. What if some want out? You starting all overagain....
Alot of details to figure out... $25 might be worth the risk for alot of people....

my .02 cents... ;)

Some good points. Buying power is your tool in this type of case. This may have to start with a primary focus which can help create profits and funds to be used to diversify. The voting would have to be quick and time limits would need to be set. Cant have it take a week to get people to vote for something you have a day to decide on.

There would need to be a committee organized and would have to meet to decide things as who gets to to possess said card and when to sell, etc. Also, what happens if it's at someone's house and they get burglarized or a tornado destroys their house? Is everyone out their investment at that point?

Good idea in principle, tough to execute logistically.

Great idea in theory but too much could go wrong.

Kevin, I thought we were talking about iconic cards?

Did anyone check out the link I posted at the top of the page? I'm going to take some time this weekend and tweak the by-laws he has posted to make it work for what I think we are trying to do.

Re: Contest with POLL $25 Paypal to winner! HUGE Card purchase

I'm torn on this one.
The reason is - I think for it to be a legitimate possibility I feel the buy in has to be fairly low. Seems around $10 - 25 max. With that being the case we'd need a good number of people to commit to get anything close to an "iconic" card....and at this point it may be more trouble than it's worth. With either not enough people to really buy a card worth investing/showing off or you have enough people (hundreds) who have to agree on what card to buy and what to do with it etc.

As it stands personally (as my response indicates) I'd be on the fence. If someone decides to follow through with the idea I'd certainly take a long look and contemplate going in.

Re: Contest with POLL $25 Paypal to winner! HUGE Card purchase

Phil and i have been exchanging PM's on this and there are a couple of things that may make it hard for some members:

1. One person would need to be in control in terms of certain types of decisions. Thinking of how it would work in the investment world, not everyone gets a vote. Of course there is input but you still have a "fund manager" at the end of the day. Issues with this would have to be hashed out as part of the rules of the funds.

2. There would need to be a focus on what is being bought. Iconic cards are great but how much do they actually move in value? Unless we're talking supers or high end prospect cards.

It would take an understanding of how the process works and people having the patience to see it through. 25 dollars a share seems like a good place to start and who knows, maybe it really takes off.

What would you think of a portfolio full of wax instead of cards? I think a portofolio approach with vintage wax would net us all money long-term and be safer as an investment. We should go after stuff from the 60's and earlier and build it up. I think some scattered cards would be good too from the 50s or earlier.

Re: Contest with POLL $25 Paypal to winner! HUGE Card purchase

My original idea was not to be an investment to make money, but an investment in FCB. My idea was to do something cool for all of FCB and maybe get some publicity by doing it. If everyone would chip in a little the whole board could be owners of a T205 Plank or High Grade '52 Mantle or whatever.

If it goes the way of a mutual fund, so be it and I would do that too. I was just thinking of ways to grow the community and actually have a signature card backing us.

Just my thoughts though.
