Re: Contest with POLL $25 Paypal to winner! HUGE Card purchase

it is a cool idea but i just see to much drama coming from this

what happens if we pick a prospect card and it drops BAD

or if its a vintage card and it has no real movement in price at all

i would say if we are going to do something like this the best bet would be instead of voting on a price pick 3-5 really nice cards in different price ranges and let everyone vote if u dont like the card dont pitch in if you do like the card do pitch in

i also think you would be able to get a lot more people buying in (if it was 2-4 cards) if this was not done so blind so to speak i mean i dont prospect much or follow prospects so if i where to say put 10 or 25 in and we get a prospect super i would be lost as to what its worth ect ect i am sure this is true no matter what type of card was picked someone would be out of there comfort zone so to speak

My original idea was not to be an investment to make money, but an investment in FCB. My idea was to do something cool for all of FCB and maybe get some publicity by doing it. If everyone would chip in a little the whole board could be owners of a T205 Plank or High Grade '52 Mantle or whatever.

If it goes the way of a mutual fund, so be it and I would do that too. I was just thinking of ways to grow the community and actually have a signature card backing us.

Just my thoughts though.

Sorry bud, I think we went down a different road on you.

That's what is so great about this board though. I'm down for whatever, I just think anything like this would be really interesting to do.

In that case, I would still be in just to say that I did it, but IDK if I would give as much.

I don't know though.

It would be more fun to subsidize a little league team -or two - because this investment venture will turn out to be a lot of work in the end with little reward.

Re: Contest with POLL $25 Paypal to winner! HUGE Card purchase

Not a new idea, its been done before, selling shares on a big $$ card, used to be more common 10-15 years ago with some companies who did this exact thing advertising in SCD etc., but always had its problems, I would never go for it myself, maybe if it was 50% share with another close collector, but thats it.

Who would be the guy than pulls the trigger and buys the card at a certain price??? the Original Purchase Price is key, if he overpays, youre all screwed at making any profit. He better know what he is doing :) especially if its out of his league (ie Vintage and Rare).

IMO
If you want to actually make $$, pool your $$$ then buy a large lot or complete set ("RAW" PreWar is best), get tham all graded, then break it up, list each card separately on a good website, sell for a few months to a years then dump the stragglers on eBay for a quick sale, then divi out everyones 50-75% profit.
BTW, This will always work... bulk purchases always are a deal, and many collectors will pay top $$ for 1-2 cards to fill in their set, but cant afford or wont bid on/buy bulk lots knowing many cards are useless to them and their partial set.

Id recommend buying a common well known set with alot of collector interest in set building ie. T206, R319, R333, T3, T205, etc.

I voted for $25. I think it is a cool idea. As long as we knew where it was being kept, voted on what was being bought and had a say as to when it was to be sold or traded. Could get really interesting. I would be in!

I think that the most I would even consider paying is 50. It'd be cool to see at all the big events and to show off. It'd be a lot of work, but a lot of fun!

Re: Contest with POLL $25 Paypal to winner! HUGE Card purchase

I like your creative thinking here Tom, so I voted for $25. -That could change though. I find this interesting and there are a lot of good points being made.

Having said that, if the card or cards plummeted I think based off the publicity alone we could qualify for a Government bailout. ;)

Seriously though my thought would possibly be for a fellow board member who hits a monster card -(or a member with a high $$ vintage card) would be thee investment card. Of course that member would have to like and to have voted for this idea. The member would discuss with the entire investment group what amount of fair market value should be placed on the card and that investment amount would then be split amongst all the members participating in this. The owner per say of this card receives his "buyout amount" but is still equally vested with the rest of the group.

Just and example: Owner offers card. Card is mutually agreed that the current value placed will be $5,000.00. Let's say 200 members are in this group. Everyone puts they're $25 investment in. The investment and card are sent to agreed upon keeper of the card. The keeper then sends the "Original" owner $4975.00. The owner is compensated yet still has a share in the future investment sale of the card.

If said card is then sold at a later date for $7,500.00, everyone in the investment group splits the profits. In this case the $25 investment would make $37.50 or $12.50 in profit. Of course we could shoot for a bigger card or a card with a double or triple potential and more of an investment amount based on the number of members willing to take part in this.

Just me buck ana qwata..

I voted for the "hell no", way too much drama that will come out of it

I voted hell no. It sounds like a good idea but there are too many things that could happen.

Also when I saw the title I thought you were going to show off your Wily Mo Pena Superfractor. ;)

I don't think there would be much "drama" if we did the buy as Group promotional item that we keep, not as an investment. A high-grade '52 Mantle, which would go up a little at a time, but is more known as an iconic card, would be a great example. It's more of a "show off" kinda thing. You make a "splash" when you buy it and word gets out and then it becomes a kinda mascot as you show it off, especially at big events.

Also, I would have no problem with Chris showing it off at his store from time to time if it's being kept nearby...

Re: Contest with POLL $25 Paypal to winner! HUGE Card purchase

My first thought was why would I want to chip in on a card that I'll likely never hold in my hand? I guess it'll be kind of like eTopps where all I'd have is a picture of a card. I think it'd be a neat PR project for FCB to show off at shows and the retail store, but I voted no because I think it'd be just too messy logistically to plan and execute and might cause more bickering than anything.

Re: Contest with POLL $25 Paypal to winner! HUGE Card purchase

Personally, I like the idea and voted $25.

I think "shares" at $25 each would be the best way to go. Then, people can spend what they want, but can get in for as little as $25.

I'm not going to echo everyone's sentiments on the topic, as it would be beating a dead horse.

The costs associated with this would need to be split, per share, for everyone. That means the person that puts in $250 would pay 10x more than the person with just 1 share of $25.

Re: Contest with POLL $25 Paypal to winner! HUGE Card purchase

I'd chip in if, after a specified period of time like a year or 5 years, there is a lottery among the "shareholders" or "investors" so that the card is awarded to one person. At $25 a pop as a lotto ticket this is something I would consider buying into if there was a trusted setup in place. The chance to own a great card that otherwise I would never be able to get my hands on would be cool...

I don't like this idea at all. Keep all shares $25 and one per member maximum...
