Re: Contest with POLL $25 Paypal to winner! HUGE Card purchase

I think it would be cool to have one awesome card i.e. ruth cut, superfractor of great player, something truly 1/1 or amazingly rare. Then all the people in the pool for the sake of argument lets say 52 people in the pool, can pay to have the card in their possession for a period of time (1 week out of the year). All applicants would need to have a confirmed address (in case we have to hunt them down)...

Too bad this idea sucks and can really only exist in a perfect world... lol

The only way you can go in is with a break if you intend to sell everything....buying singles just doesnt work..... I have been in groups and it never works.. I was part of First_class_card_guys.. hell I made the name... I did most of the buying and negotiating at the shows... but it just didnt work for me in the end.... When you have more then one person.. you have too many opinions on to do.. hold or sell..... i never will do it again

IF I'm reading this right, this wouldn't be a buy AND sell piece, just a one-time buy and HOLD for an indefinite time...

This is a very interesting idea, but I don't see how it could ever work.

It is interesting to read that guys who will spend money on a crapshoot (box breaks) are reluctant to throw $25 into a pool to buy something that will always hold value (High grade Ruth, Mantle, Cobb etc...)

Thanks for the comments though and keep them coming. I'll close the contest Monday night.

I personally really like the idea. I voted for throwing in $200. I would much rather deal with the 25 people investing $200 instead of the 200 people investing $25 on a $5K card.

We all know rules will apply and I am anxious to see the fine print.

I think it would be an interesting process, so I'd be willing to toss in $25.

Would have to see what the rules, etc, would look like before I made a final decision though.

very interesting idea. I don't think I'd go 25, maybe 10, so I'm voting no.

The collection world varies over a wide spectrum, to purchase one card that everyone will appreciate will be difficult. If the group decides on a card that I don't like, then my interest would be lost, and would be looking for a way out....

I think this could be remedied by having shares that can be bought, traded or sold.

Any more thoughts?

Re: Contest with POLL $25 Paypal to winner! HUGE Card purchase

I say no way. The only way I would even consider it is if it were an awesome vintage card like a Ruth rookie or high grade Cobb, something along that line. And then it would have to be purchased by someone I totally trusted and stored in a place I knew it was safe, like in a bank. It would be only for investment purposes, not for enjoyment.

And I would also want some sort of legal document stating my claim in said item. Not to sound morbid, but if the person who had possession or had the key to the safety deposit box had an accident and died, how else would I prove to a relative that I was part owner? And if said relative wanted to fight me in court, there goes more money I don't have.

I just see way too many issues for this to work. I think the only safe way for this to work would be a big investor like Leaf or Beckett to purchase the card and sell shares. But then again, if one of them were to go under, could the people who are owed money stake a claim, sell it and keep the profit for themselves?

See, too many issues! No way Jose!

$10-$25 seems reasonable in my book, anything over that seems like a stretch.

Really like the idea though.

My thoughts exactly. It would be a pretty good idea to get this community closer together so that we can decide on what card to buy when to sell it and so on. Thanks for the contest!

Random, but isn't there some legal issue here if there are enough investors?

I think that $10-$25 would be reasonable. It would be awesome to say, "I own part of that" to something that is a truly iconic card. I would want it to be a modern card though. Something that modern day collectors have been chasing and we could say we own part of it!

Re: Contest with POLL $25 Paypal to winner! HUGE Card purchase

Let me start by saying I have nothing against the OP on this what so ever but this might be the worst idea I've ever seen posted. Have the people that are considering this actually been on FCB at all. Hell, we have people start threads in memoriam to recently deceased players and they end with bickering. Contributing money to a card that you will never touch, will ultimately end in fighting, and not making much (or any) profit once it is sold (and it will be sold because of said fighting) seems like a recipe for disaster.

In a perfect world maybe but better to leave this alone. Besides, at $25 per man you'd need a 500-1000 people to obtain a high grade Mantle rookie.

You're entitled to your opinion, but the worst idea ever? The poll is nearly 50-50 and many said no but would consider joining if the details are worked out. I figured that we could try to do something as a "community". Something that would unify us for a singular cause. Thanks for the input. I hope you can see the light and reconsider joining the fun, not just the profit

No, even a significant increase in price wouldn't mean much for each shareholder. Double your money? It looks nice going from $100 to $200, but from $10 to $20? Too much of a hassle in my opinion.

Re: Contest with POLL $25 Paypal to winner! HUGE Card purchase

I voted $200 per share. I'm not sure how this is so complicated. We find a card, let's say the Harper Super Auto, and divide the cost. Let's say it costs $20,000.

We offer 100 shares at $200 each. Each share gets one vote of sale.

It takes 51 votes to sell the card, which is listed until sold on eBay with a $40,000 BIN/BO. Votes are taken on each offer received. We could even have shareholders post their sell votes, eg if it goes over $30k my vote is automatically to sell.
