Settling with the family allows him to avoid a civil trial. There are still criminal charges that he can't or hasn't yet been able to buy his way out of.

Even in the US, you will see drunk drivers get sued by families in civil court. Even if you aren't found guilty in criminal court, you could still be liable for a civil suit. For example, OJ Simpson was found not guilty of murder but his ex-wife's family sued him in civil court and won. The benefit of settling with the family is that sometimes the prosecutors will decide to drop the criminal charges because the family will not support the charges because they already received a settlement.
