That whole "Razor backed by Upper Deck" thing is so stupid... why would UD use ANOTHER company to accomplish something that they could just do THEMSELVES.

MLB might not look too kindly on UD putting out an unlisensed product alongside their licensed ones. Besides, what I've heard is not that UD "owns" Razor, but that they are giving them some financial backing in order to weaken their main competitor's stronghold EDIT TO ADD with some possible beneficial use of contractual rights for players down the road.

Sorry to harp on it, cgilmo, but unsubstantiated or not, this stuff is part of our hobby. Further, I personally don't view it as damaging to either company, nor do I consider it a "conspiracy."

Can you prove or disprove or really add anything to the discussion other than what you heard second or third hand?

No, but what is your guess as to the percentage of things discussed on this board that are based on fact vs. conjecture vs. opinion? Is the problem here only the company in question?

ding ding ding

There are alot of friendships on this board with brian, and razor, which I think is cool. BUT, it shouldn't blind us either, or hold the board back from talking about the company.

To be fair, many other things discussed based on conjecture are non-impactful, such as, what do you think the best card to have of this player is?? If there were conspiracy theories surrounding other companies I believe those would be stopped too, I don't think this board wants to be responsible, in particular, Chris, for harming a company's rep unless it is facts.

Fair enough, but I have to reiterate that I don't view this as conspiracy because I don't view it as damaging to either company. What would be the big deal, really? Maybe I just don't see it because I don't collect prospects or buy wax.

Absolutely not, if the rumor was Topps being financially backed by UD it would get the same treatment.

It's certainly interesting because I know a little about how card companies are run. I am interested from a sports marketing business point of view, not at all as a collector. Razor's business plan is a striking one, to be sure.

Conspiracy or not...Razor/Brian has made it very clear that money appears to be no object. And from that, a donkey on a mule walking the Grand Canyon can assume that Razor is backed by someone/something with money to burn.

Of course, not knowing the contract figures for exclusivity and/or per signature cost, I don't know what kind of money we are talking about...but I'll assume it's more than $5.26.

I was going to make that point. It's not like Brian has been unemployed for the last decade +.

Why don't you just come out and share your info rather than being so damn cryptic about everything? You barely ever help these types of discussions and wonder why they keep cropping up.

I said the same exact thing a few pages ago. He's about as obvious as it gets.

I do not, nor will I claim or imply that I do.

I will say however that I do believe that someone/something else is at least a 50% investor in Razor. And I'm not referring to Edgeman.

And again, this is in no way "bashing" Razor...I'm just stating my opinion that someone/something provided the cash for these contracts - and I don't believe that it was someone in the collectibles industry.

to assume that someone could pony up all the exclusive money without a partner or a strong financial backer is absurd... not saying its ud... maybe its the illumanati! but there has got to be something or someone backing it...

the most important things to me in the whole razor discussion are:
they will help topps and ud produce quality products.
they will validate the mlbpa rookie logo with exclusives.
they will even out the prospect playing field (license aside).
matt wieters will have an upper deck mlbpa logo card 1 full year before a topps logo card.

I pretty much agree with all that you've said. Now, I have not followed the whole Razor discussion (kind of tough on these boards, eh?), so can you fill me in as to why your last point is true? Thanks.

I am not cryptic about anything. I share information that topps, UD, razor, tristar, press pass, or whatever company gives me if they tell me I can share. There is much that I just can't share because I am asked not to.

There is nothing cryptic at all about anything I have said in this thread.

Cryptic? What the hell is Chris being cryptic about? Anyone who read SCD, Tuff Stuff, or any other sportscard mag in the last fifteen years knows that the Edgeman took out full page ads in nearly every major publication out there. He had the same size ads as Kit Young, Bill Henderson, Alan Rosen, etc

I got an email last week from Edgeman, they are one of my distributors. The email stated that as of 12/31/08 they are closing their doors.

The reason they are closing is so Brian can take care of Razor full time. The email also stated that Brian has wanted to be a card manufacture for a while now.

I know I will miss my dealings with Edgeman but have been told my rep has a new job already in place at another distributor.

For those that don't know, Edgeman is a pretty big distributor. They carry everything. Just take a look at their site when you get a chance.
