It all started with this card....

Back in 2003 I pulled one of these cards and thought it was short printed. I couldn't find any info on a print run so I found the old BMB and made my first post. The rest is history.
I just bought the card back (after looking for one for nearly two years) and was wondering what brought people to the old BMB or here for the first time.
Lets hear some stories....

It all started for me with....

Brain surgery.

In May 2005, after experiencing excruciating headaches at night, I was diagnosed with a benign (thank God) brain tumor the size of a grown man's fist. In June 2005 it was removed successfully. (Now I have another small brain tumor - pea-sized - but it is benign and has not grown in three years, thank God.)

I was due to begin college in the fall of 2005, but my surgery delayed that for a year. During my recovery time, I discovered a little site called Dave and Adam's Card World. This led to a summer of opening my first hobby boxes, which led to an increased passion for the hobby. Some notables I opened were 2005 Reflections (Jose Reyes/David Wright dual autograph /99 being the highlight) and 2005 Fleer Authentix (Randy Johnson patch, Joe Mauer patch, David Wright GU /10, and Sammy Sosa Majestic logo). The Wright pulls were my first exposure to David Wright as a player, believe it or not.

Soon after I discovered the BMB and Trading Card Central. After seeing the popularity of the player collection, I chose to go that direction with both Sammy Sosa and David Wright. I had always been a Sosa fan, and had a sizable collection of base and inserts from my earlier collecting days (as a kid, I kept all base and inserts of star players in binders). The two significant David Wright pulls encouraged me to collect him.

And, the rest is history.

I had been out of collecting for quite a few years as work, cars, and girls got in the way. Optimism finally started to return to Milwaukee in 2003 after drafting Prince and then Rickie. The excitement and better days on the horizon brought me back to cards as well. I picked up a few packs and could never pull a Rickie Weeks auto but when I pulled an Arod Trading Places auto I knew I could find a taker. Ended up finding the old BMB in search of traders and have been around since

Joined a few years ago. This last october I broke my femur is half (1 of the 2 "balls broke completly off) and dislocated my knee while playing football. I had about 2 1/2 weeks off of school so I got bored because I was sleeping 23 hours of the day for about 1 1/2 weeks. After my doctor altterd my meds I got bored during the day and rememberd this site. I started a chat thread and eventually started to post more often.

Well for me, it went like this... around 2008 (or maybe late 2007) I joined up on the 2nd version of Topps just to get some hobby info. Around a year later or so, I "became a fan" (as it was called then) of FCB on Facebook without actually being a member here. One day I decided to sign up... I guess...

It piqued my interest, so I bought a blaster of 2005 Topps Chrome and pulled this card (ebay scan, I've since moved the exact card)

I also decided to start a Favre collection at the time, so I gravitated to Beckett to find out what the Scheirholtz was worth and to start looking for Favre cards. The Favre hunt was what got me onto eBay, where I quickly switched to Yount and never looked back.

2005 Topps Chrome Update (for me) blasters were nice. I still have the Garza refractor autograph I pulled.

When I really got back into collecting it coincided with a surgery as well.
That and the hype of the 06' football draft class.

I bought some retail blasters (something I'd always occasionally do through my teen years even though I wasn't much of a "collector"). Also bought a Beckett while I was stuck home after the surgery. Think I read it front to back about 10 times.....it had a lot of rookie premiere info and I was amazed by all the cool types of cards that would be coming out.
I knew retail was for suckers so I figured I could go online and find a site to buy hobby packs.
That left me to Dave and Adams and I placed an order for some packs.
Ordered like 10 packs of Threads and amazingly I got 3 hits......including a Vince Young autographed letter rc. Which was one of the cards that I saw in Beckett and really wanted.
So yeah......that pretty much did it and from that point I was addicted lol.

I then found the Beckett board as well. Loved looking at box breaks.
Started to really learn and become an expert of the hobby.......probably tons of people from this site that helped me out. Then I got involved with and figured out Ebay and I was hooked.
While I love this site (and it serves the same purpose) that is why I was sad when the BMB died. It was a "gateway" site for me, and I'd imagine, many others as well. I know it was the first place I looked and found when I was coming back and wanting info.
If that site looked like it does today, I'm not sure I'd be collecting again (though that would mean I'd probably have more money lol). Hopefully someone in that position today would be able to find this site.

this card is what got me to where i am today:

sure i bought packs the years before, in fact the first full box i ever bought was when 1981 Donruss came out, bought the whole thing at the local candy store.

but it was the Gooden Rookie that got me to the full blown addict stage of collecting life.

what got me to BMB and eventually to FCB is a little different. from 1985 to 1997 i was a hard card junkie.
from 1985 to 1991 it was easy to collect all four sports. in 1998 i decided to quit cold turkey and gave it
up for women and drinking.

in 2005 i had to move (from where i had lived since 1987) so that meant handling and throwing out at least a million cards.....1991 hoops, 1990 fleer, 1990 score football, 1991 skybox....you get the picture.

and in doing so, i caught the card heroin addiction again, which lead me to BMB, which lead me to here.

I became one of the night crew and then got banned from BMB for about 200 years and then had that lifted about 8 months after not
caring that I could not go on there. But when I did get back on BMB I was invited here and joined and then was deleted and then

I joined beckett message boards while just typing in "sports card trading sites"....I did this because I use to trade on the old AOL trading boards. When Beckett was threatening to charge us I then typed it in again "sports card trading sites" and stumbled upson this site and Sports Card Forum. To this day I use both sites. I use this for info and posts and SCF for trading....

Exactly. Time and time again he proves that he is a complete dick.

Anyway.

I started back on the AOL Sports Cards chat. Found BMB when it was just starting out. Was a member on many sites that came and went, some are still around. And finally came here. While I no longer collect cards I hang around for ***** and giggles. I've had many, many years of enjoyment in this hobby to remember. Of all the cards I've had I only "miss" my Ken Griffey Jr. 1998 Bowman Chrome Golden Anniversary Refractor /5 and my 2000 UD 3000 Hit Club collection. I had all of the bats, all of the jerseys, all of the bat/jersey-bat/cap combos and a good majority of the bat/jersey/autos (#'d to players uniform number). I was paid handsomely for all of them, but still miss the time and effort that I put into collecting them. I pretty much was done with the hobby after I made a killing selling 1st year Exquiste basketball singles to a collector in Puerto Rico. I tried to get back into things by collection Rafael Palmeiro (cheap and for fun) but just don't care enough anymore.

OMG, AOL Sports Cards Chat?!? Damn that was a long time ago! I joined BMB just to find other Bagwell collectors to trade with, then heard about FCB in a thread and checked it out. I'm still a n00b here i guess, but at least I have made a couple purchases already so my collection has technically grown because of it.

Hmm... I honestly dont remember my first Bagwell card. I think my friends just gave me their Astros cards in one big batch and I divided them up. So, technically I didnt have just one card, but a handful. That was in 94, so it could have been any brand...

I'm kinda a new guy as far as cards go. It was 2002 and Adam Dunn caught my attention. Peter Gammons would rave about his power and with him being a red I could drive up to Chattanooga and see him along with Austin Kerns, Willy Mo Pena, and Corky Freakin Miller.


I had always loved baseball, buying Adam Dunn cards got me hooked on cards.
