50 games seems harsh to me. I do believe he should be suspended, but that seems like a long time.

But my gut feeling is that he'll never do it again while he's in the MLB if he has any brains. If we responded to drunk driving with confiscating a license for 10 years and a minimum of 3 months in jail I bet people would stop getting killed. It's a privilege to play in the MLB, not a right just because you're talented. I can bet he knew the rules and knowingly risked it anyways, no sympathy.

My question would be this then. In states where marijuana is legal (Washington and Colorado) (or legal with a medical card - California), why would he be punished? I'm just saying that as more and more states legalize marijuana - it's going to be ridiculous that a minor league player can get a 50 game suspension.

First I just want to ask a question. Isn't it possible that Washington and CO are going to get sued by the federal government? Or is that not an option anymore, I haven't been following.

But second I agree to the extent that if steroids are 50, marijuana should be less. However, when you sign your contract you accept the terms of the MLB player agreement, which explicitly banks marijuana, cocaine, methamphetamines, etc. I've always been one to comply by rules for the most part especially when my income was on the line. Like I said it's a privilege to play in the MLB, a HUGE privilege and with it come scrutinous procedures and penalties to make sure you don't overstep boundaries

I just don't think it's unreasonable for the MLB to say, ok you're going to become a famous multimillionaire, play in front of 100,000 people and millions on TV, please don't do illegal drugs..

By the way - I am agreeing that he should be suspended exactly what the punishment is dictated to him. However, I'm just stating that 50 games is a bit out of hand when marijuana is becoming legalized in several states. I think that drunk driving should also carry a 50 game suspension. Just my opinion.

It cracks me up that the feds would worry themselves about this. No bigger problems out there right?? LOL

Its still so funny how people will accept fall over drunk people but heavens forbid you smoke a lil weed your a drug abuser. How many people died in DWI car wrecks as opposed to driving with weed in you.
Both acts are irresponsible so...

How damn hard is it to follow the laws and rules of this country, and the rules of MLB????????

Should be a whole year!! If its against the rules, its a against the rules!!!

Players and people in generla are getting to be soooo stupid!!!! Follow the rules and its not an issue!

Just because in my opinion steroids totally compromise the game while
marijuana doesn't compromise it and if you want to argue that it does it isn't nearly to the extent that steroids do

It sucks that he was suspended, but under FEDERAL Law which supersedes state law, Weed is illegal. MLB and MLBPA have agreed that it is considered a drug of abuse. Regardless of what state the player plays in, it is considered illegal by MLB and the MLBPA.. I do agree with one of the posters Weed should be suspended, but harder drugs, coke, etc should have a stiffer penalty. But its an ambiguity..
I heard Jeremy Jefferies wants to know when Jonathan is bringing over some of that Houston ASTRO-turf..

And what of the societal effect of the drug trade?

He clearly doesn't have a medical marijuana card as I suspect he wouldn't be suspended if he did and if he was in such poor health to require weed to ease the pain or whatever then playing MLB baseball is probably not in his future anyways. Point being, it is illegal except in Wa and Co which to my knowledge he is not from so it's pretty open-shut. I have no qualms holding folks who make massive amounts of money and are in the public spotlight eg kids to be held to a higher standard. If all the disagreement is from some folks is strictly because they invested money on his cards then there's this thing called perspective, they need some.

On that point I'm completely with you but that isn't he responsibility of the MLB that's on state and federal governments
It is there responsibility if one of their players is contributing to that though.
