Maybe the market was getting a little too crowded???

Trading card manufacturer In The Game will expand into the baseball card market later this year. Preliminary details were released to collectors Wednesday at the 2010 National Sports Collectors Convention in Baltimore.

2010 In The Game Heroes and Prospects Baseball Hits will be the company’s first foray into the world of baseball cards.

For collectors that are familiar with the company’s releases for the hockey card market, the company’s Heroes and Prospects set is immediately associated with bringing the first autograph cards of hockey’s brightest young stars to the hobby. Since the 2004-05 season, the Heroes and Prospects brand has seen the cardboard debuts of Sidney Crosby, Alexander Ovechkin, Evgeni Malkin, John Tavares, Steven Stamkos, Patrick Kane, Carey Price and many other current and future superstars.

“Over the past few years, In The Game’s Heroes and Prospects releases have remained among the most popular on the hockey card market and as the brand heads into its seventh season, we wanted to extend it into the baseball card market,” said In The Game’s President, Dr. Brian Price. “Our deep appreciation for the amazing history of the sport of baseball allows us to also go after some great names that are sure to appeal to collectors and we look forward to producing something that is sure to stand out in the marketplace.”

Each box of 2010 In The Game Heroes and Prospects Baseball Hits will contain four cards – all ‘hits’.

“We feel that the hobby is always moving in different directions, by making this product, it allows us to focus on what many collectors want the most – the “hits,” said Price.

On average, there will be 3.5 Prospect Autographs per box and every other box will contain one Heroes Cut Signature or Heroes Game-Used Memorabilia card.

The premier edition of In The Game Heroes and Prospects Baseball Hits will be released in November and the company promises the product will be “extremely limited”. Confirmed prospects to be featured include young stars Jason Heyward and Tim Beckham. A complete checklist will be available on the company’s website October 1.

As for the Heroes component of this product, Heroes Cut Signatures or limited Heroes Game-Used Memorabilia cards will feature Joe DiMaggio, Ted Williams and Hank Aaron. Collectors can view the checklist for this portion of the product on September 15, 2010. The company released images Wednesday, showing cut autograph cards of Aaron and Williams.

“Who knows what direction that the success of 2010 In The Game Heroes and Prospects Baseball Hits will take us,” said Price. “If our new products appeal to enough collectors, I would love to see an expansion into the basketball and football prospect market as well. Only time will tell if we can accomplish this, but with the support of collectors we can certainly work hard to deliver what they want to see.”

Makes sense in retrospect. In football, Leaf Certified Materials and Leaf Limited were renamed Donruss Certified Materials and Donruss Limited by Panini.

Which is weird because in the late 90's, Leaf Limited baseball was changed to Donruss Limited in like 1997 or 1998.

Guys, there is obviously a misunderstanding about this transition.

Razor still exists and has all the baseball deals. It is being looked at by several manufacturers for acquisition.

I acquired all cut inventory, brand names not associated with baseball, and all products in process (mma and pop century), plus employees and day to day operations .

I would ask you be patient. Our complete plan will be playing out over the next few months.

In the meantime, razor's FCB account is no longer going to be used . Gilmore will share additional info when available.

Bg

P.s. - thanks to those who wished u well today.

So you moved Razor into a building with a new name, but left the Razor letterhead and baseball license in the old building's closet because it is essentially worthless because of the market situation right now? But Razor still exists because there is paperwork out there saying it does, even though it has no functioning body.

What is the huge announcement you promised from Razor? I know it can't be this, because that would conflict with the mission statement that Leaf is unrelated to Razor. Or did you also not load that into the U-Haul when you moved offices with the rest of the garb?

And I'm not sure why I teyped this since the account is now defunct...unless you acquire the Razor message board account as well.

BG and Razor realized the importance of brand recognition.

It was pointed out early on, but Razor was sure they could make a name for themselves--and they did, and now they're Leaf.

This move is brilliant. The artist-formerly-known-as-Razor will be welcomed to the hobby.

Agreed Brand Recognition is huge.

BG if you can't explain it then why bring it up.I think you just like the thrill of being able to say I know something you don't know. That is half the reason people give you ****.If you just shut your mouth about things until the time is right to fully explain a situation then you would be better off.

I loved Leaf in the '90s, but we all know this isn't the same product or lineage. This may be a hard sell outside of MMA.

I understand this implies Razor is no more, but, I mean, who's going to take it as such? This reminds me of those shady eBay sellers who change their ID every few months so not to be recognized by the people they've screwed over.

Now, Razor didn't screw anyone over, but it certainly feels like a cleansing of the spirits, if you will.

Really? Broken guarantee/promise

I'll keep it short and sweet --- this move is not nearly as groundbreaking as Brian thinks it is.

Sorry.

I predicted in other thread about the hint that it would be news that a small % of care about and wouldn't classify it as major news to the hobby
Not meant as a rip on BG
It is just "oh, ok" news

Razor threads make me want to do one of two things: kill myself; or kill a bunch of other people. I still can't decide which.

What exactly did Razor do wrong? They released a quality, on card autograph set in 2008 Sig Series. They released Lettermen as well. I hate manufactured patch autos, but the Razor ones are pretty well made. They released Metal parallels on Ebay. Ok. Parallels aren't new to the hobby. They released the prismatic "proof" cards as well. Effectively the same thing Topps does with encased blankback proofs sold through the Topps Vault.

People hate Razor because they're prospectors. They lost money on an investment, so they come whine about it on a messageboard. It isn't Razor's fault you lost money on their product. It's your fault because you're an idiot who's trying to make money on baseball cards

Some things I noticed in the BG Leaf quote
1) "My vision for the future..." Um, the previous vision was a 3 year plan with $_____ put aside to make Sig Series/Razor work
2) Razor did a terrific job with Sig Series as a freshman company in the baseball world. It then started to become less creative (ie some cried for chrome so they did Metal, they repackaged other companies' goods after getting cards slabbed). Now they merge/become Leaf.
Congrats to BG for staying involved in a hobby/business he loves but to call this a blockbuster surprise....blah

BG admitted in a post that Razor would never do a product that mirrored the original Sig Series because he admitted it wouldn't be loyal to those who purchased Sig Series. Within a few months ----- Razor Metal and exact mirror!!!

he apologized, admitted error, and basically said he would never do anything remotedly cloase to that mistake. What eventually happened? Another product was planned (Prism? or something like that). It was a mirror of the Metal. It eventyually made it to ebay for a handful of hours until BG pulled it

Not trying to beat dead horse BUT BUT BUT BUT if people are going to say that razor never did anything wrong, etc.........the dead horse will get beaten

Who did you acquire the inventory, employees, and other such things from? You were (and according to the website still are) the President and CEO of Razor Entertainment. Were you buying from yourself?

One more puzzling thing with the "not related to one another" issue...wouldn't the use of the Razor account on FCB to talk about both Razor's potential selling and then speaking as an employee of Leaf create a huge conflict of interest?

It's like the CEO of McDonald's left and took all of the assets of McDonald's to Burger King, but made a statement on the present and future of both restaurants while wearing a Ronald McDonald costume.
