Being a hitting coach, and being able to hit for contact/power in the majors are exclusive to each other. Most hitting coaches have the same messages, its just how they can get the messages across for the players to use said messages.

Rod Carew did not have a good track record as a hitting coach. Even Rob Deer was/is a hitting coach in the minors.

Tony Gwynn Jr. has his very own hitting coach available 24/7, but that still won't make him a .300 hitter.

Pretty sure he wasn't Juicing in 1987 when he hit 49 home runs in his rookie season. :?

He was on a team with Canseco.

Jose Canseco says he and fellow slugger Mark McGwire were never "buddy buddies" as teammates on the Oakland Athletics, but had at least one thing in common that they talked about regularly: Using steroids.

So by this logic every player Canseco ever played with used steroids.

About damn time!!!

McGwire has pretty much been an offseason hitting coach since he retired anyway. There are several players he has trained with in the offseason helping them with their hitting.

And as far as the steroids, who gives a **** anymore really? And I don't see why he'd be a part of the postgame pressers. Mitchell Page and Hal McRae and Marty Mason and the rest rarely ever are. I am sure there will be an initial onslaught, but damn, get over it already.

Matt Holliday is one of those players....so is Chris Duncan.

I said that because it seems as Brewers hitting coach Dale Sveum is always interviewed.

I can't recall any Cardinals hitting coaches ever being interviewed on FSN. Then again, no former Cardinals hitting coach has ever had the stature of Mark McGwire either, lol. Only time I ever see Duncan interviewed is after a big time pitching performance........which was pretty often this season with Wainwright, Carpenter and Piniero on the bump. But usually it's only Tony on the podium, and when anyone else is interviewed it's just standing in the clubhouse.

Duncan isn't a fair example. He would never make another major league club other than the Cardinals.

And lets be honest, hitting is very close to an exact science and every MLB player has an idea of what they personally need to be doing during every AB and BP session. A hitting coach needs to spot holes and make minor tweaks, but most importantly, get along with the guys and be able to work with them and talk about the tweaks and holes.

I know I'll be on pins and needles waiting for these guys to come back to baseball - wait a minute...

What's he going to a coach for?

Cardinal's hitting coach

they should bring someone that knows how to hit without help...mcgwire didnt put up great numbers untill he started juicing..i would much rather have a tony gwynn type coach

He hit 49 HR's in 1987.[/quote:1p3l8vfx]

Canseco has admitted being on the juice for his 40/40 (1988), 1987 isn't a stretch...

You were the first player using steroids?
I wouldn’t say that, but I was the first player that maximized the use of steroids, that broke records with it—the 40/40. I was the fastest player at 250 pounds, I had world-class sprinting speed, I did what I did and I looked the way I looked. So all the players came to me for information. Trainers and coaches did also. I educated Major League Baseball on how to use steroids properly. I was being blackballed because they wanted to send a signal to the rest of the players to stop using steroids. How do you do it? Get rid of the individual who brought it and educated everyone about it. I think Major League Baseball completely underestimated me; they probably thought I was some ignorant Latino who would just go away.

That sounds racist.
Well, I believe there was a hint of that because there were other players, for example Mark McGwire, who was a pronounced and obvious steroid user. He was even bigger than I was. And they dared not touch him because he is protected by America.

Because he’s white and you’re Latino?
I can remember reading a newspaper that said, “The All-American Boy, Mark McGwire.” And we know as athletes—and any minority athlete would agree with this statement—once you’re labeled the “All-American boy,” you’re protected by, not just Major League Baseball, but the social structure also. So, we knew he was untouchable.

That’s mostly the media picking on who they want to pick on.
Well, in today’s world, good can’t survive without the bad and the bad can’t survive without the good, so you have to construct the good and the bad. The media portrayed Mark McGwire and myself as foes. “Okay, Jose, you hit a baseball today this far. Do you think Mark McGwire’s went farther than yours?”

You guys played along with it?
We didn’t have a choice. Not that we played along, but whatever position the media put us in, we had no choice about it. And the public believes in general that what the media says is pretty accurate.

Glad to finally see some recognition again. Steroids don't make talent, they just enhance talent.

The guy that said McGwire doesn't know how to hit is an idiot! Never ceases to amaze me how much credit fans give to steriods. McGwire is a very knowledgeable hitter! Unreal knowledge of weight distribution, and the strike zone. He will make a great coach, he can still hout hit all of his pupils except Pujols!

i understand what your saying. But, there alot of major league hitting coaches that did not have high career batting averages. he knows his **** when it comes to hitting. For the last 3-4 off seasons he has worked with a bunch of guys from around the league. I hope it true so i can try to go see him when the cards into my area. It's not everyday that your favorite player of all time who is retired, comes out and makes himself visable in the sport. I personally think it's too good to be true. He is gonna have to have some kind of press conference before it all goes down. I just don't think its gonna happen.

Why is that?

Would you rather have a hitter that hit .310 15 Hr and 80 Rbi

or

.280 hitter with 30 Hr and 95 RBI?

I will take the homerun hitter in a second.....

a .310 hitter only gets three more hits per 100 at bats and doesn't scare the pitcher as much, doesn't require more pitching changes to be made because of them, etc etc etc
