Ken Rosenthal has reported that the Rays are activily trying to acquire the Blue Jays Roy Halladay. They have been mulling over whether or not to offer BJ Upton, Wade Davis, and couple of prospects. Thus opening a spot for Desmond Jennings. He stated this is the most surprising rumor of the day but also believes this could be a scare to Boston and the Yankees to make them offer up more for Halladay

If this is not a rumor and we do have the money for Halladay. This would be a very big deal... Upton is in for a big payday from arbitration so giving him up for Halladay will not cost the Rays much money

Upton won't be getting anywhere close to $20MM a year, and that's what Halladay will cost via an extension. So it would still cost the Rays a ton. Money which they might not have. I can see them wanting to go for it, though because as crazy as it sounds, their window is already starting to close.

While I don't think anything will come of this, and even if it did, reports suggest the Jays would flip Upton, this would be my nightmare trade scenario:

My all-time favourite player dealt for my absolute most despised player (Upton). I honestly can't fathom a worse trade, at least from my fan perspective.
Halladay's salary for 09 is $14.25 million... Upton is expected to get $6-$10 million... Crazy but true. Then with the loss of Iwamura earlier this off-season of a $4.25 Million contract. Basically it's broken even

Hughes AND Jackson? That seems pretty steep, but I guess they have a plethora of talent and money, and will be trying to repeat in 2010, so why not?

But Halladay's 2010 salary is $15.75 and is expected to command $20ish from 2011 on. I'd be shocked if Upton was anywhere close to the top end of that $6-10MM range.

I would love to see Halladay in St. Pete, but not for Davis and Upton.

As much as I dog Upton, he is still a special talent, and will not make that much in arb due to having an off season this year.

Davis is the real deal, and is still under team control.

I'm not willing to give up 4-5 years of Davis for one year of Halladay.

The Rays and Cubs are now very close to completing the Burrell/Bradley swap. The 2 teams are now $1-$2 Million away from the deal rather than the $3-$4 they had been stuck on for weeks.

If the Cubs want to get rid of the guy so badly why not pay that $1-$2 million more? I know they are financially stuck right now but if they say they had enough money to try and go after Doc Halliday why don't they have this $1-$2 million to add?

Granderson for Hughes and Jackson? As a Tigers fan, I don't like this deal. Granderson is a very good centerfielder playing in a large park where outfield defense is at a premium and who has shown huge offensive potential (career OPS+ of 113 with 2 of last 3 years of 120 or more), struggles against lefties notwhithstanding. And even there, he showed in '08 that he can handle lefties respectably then he regressed in '09. He is also under team control through '13 with a reasonable contract. As for the return, Hughes looks to be a stud reliever who may/may not have the ability to handle the starting rotation. Jackson is definitely a stud prospect, but he is still a prospect.

Rays shopping Dioner Navarro with the intent on having Kelly Shoppach start full time and either John Jaso or Shawn Riggans be the backup.

The Giants, Blue Jays, Mets, Rockies, and Mariners have stated their interest. The Rays will be looking for a relief pitcher who has the capability to set-up and/or close. Anybody come to mind that may be available from any of these teams?

Edit: The Rays will try to come to an agreement during the Winter Meetings and wait until Friday to finalize if a deal is reached. Why? They are going after Ryan Doumit and want to wait to see whether or not they can get Doumit and what they will have to give up to get him. That might change who they want in return for Navarro

This is all coming from my cousin who is in Indy

For Jackson and Hughes? Now that is laughable...The Yanks would never do that.

If you factor Hughes as a RP it's not that crazy. Still lopsided for the Tigers, but deals like this usually are for guys that are locked up long term at a decent price.

It still is. Hughes was a monster and Jackson is going to take over for Matsui in the outfield in a year or so. Why get Granderson when you don't need him and give up Hughes?

Will you stop collecting Granderson if he becomes a Yankee?

Yeah, it's a real possibility. I'm debating that at the moment.

Yeah, but Hughes is also a RP. RP doesn't command as much even if you are really good. Take Hughes out and the deal doesn't make sense for either team.

If you take Hughes out of the deal, then the Yankees ***** it. I don't think the deal will go through as is (Granderson for Ajax/Hughes).

According to FOXSports.com, the Yankees, Diamondbacks and Tigers have discussed a three-way trade that would send Curtis Granderson to New York and right-hander Edwin Jackson to Arizona.

Ken Rosenthal adds that the Tigers would receive Max Scherzer from Arizona, but also notes that "talks are at an impasse," so it's doubtful this one grows legs. The deal is reportedly being "pushed by the Diamondbacks."

----------

The D'Backs pushed for a blockbuster three-way deal with the Yankees and Tigers today, only to see one of those two teams veto it, according to Jon Paul Morosi and Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports. However, the teams are discussing the following scenario.

The deal would send Curtis Granderson to the Yanks, along with a prospect or two from the D'Backs. Arizona would obtain Edwin Jackson from the Tigers and Ian Kennedy from the Yankees. The Tigers would obtain Max Scherzer from the D'Backs and Austin Jackson, Phil Coke and Michael Dunn from the Yanks.

Depending on the prospects the Yankees would get, Kennedy, Jackson, Coke, and Dunn for Granderson and prospects is much better then Hughes and Jackson for Granderson.
