I would say for Rusty it would be the 1982 Topps Blackless

When I collected Latrell Sprewell, the one I always wanted was the 96-97 Skybox Autographics Blue autograph or the 1992 Star Pics auto. I just couldn't plop the $50 for them.

That and the 97-98 Precious Metal Gems Green. I had the red and it was AWESOME.

Since it was mentioned earlier, I thought I would share information about the orange Ripken card. Cal Ripken, Jr., had his first and second trading card produced during the 1980 season while at AA Charlotte. That season, Cal and the O's would go on to win the AA Southern League Championship. During the season the O's had a SGA for a blue bordered team set. Unknown to the players, the team also worked out an agreement with the Charlotte Police Department to produce an orange bordered set of the cards. The backs had police tips, baseball tips and contact info for the police department. The officers gave them out during the summer of 1980 and the cards were never put together as sets. With that being said it was a matter of the luck of the draw so to speak. I have had the pleasure of chatting with some of the players in the set and have learned that they had no clue this was done in 1980. Many of them never knew of the cards until the past few years. In regards to production, one can only speculate. What I do know is that only 5 have sold at public auction since October 2006 and 3 that sold were part of a group auctioned one at a time. It's not only Cal's "ultimate card", it's his "Holy Grail". Considering the manner in which they were distributed and the cost to produce them I would not be surprised if there are fewer than 50 in the world. I only know of two complete sets of orange bordered cards in the world.

Subtracting the obvious 1/1 or bat barrell cards or even the Jumbo 5 x7 or Auqeous test from Donruss, for me this is the Clark card that is the ultimate:

The '86 over the '87 Fleer? Oh man the '87 Fleer Clark was a dominant card for me as a kid. I remember buying one for $27 which at the time was a deal because it was "less than book". The Thrill still rules

I starting collecting in 1988 and got an '87 Fleer in a pack but I couldn't get an '86 Rookies without buying a set that included the Canseco and was horribly over priced. I finally found an '86 Clark for $9, normally sold for around $15 and jumped all over it as a 10 year old. Actually it was a tough choice packs of 1988 Topps were something like 35 to 50 cents and I could have bought half of a box for that price.

So as far as I'm concerned the '86 Rookies is the ultimate card, but I think a close second is the '87 Fleer glossy I remember tilting ever '87 Clark I could find to see if it was a glossy version.

IDK for me... The Bowman Red 1/1 was a helluva pretty penny to pay (I FOUND IT TOO!!!!!). I think any of his minor league issued cards seem to be the "ultimate". Especially when signed. I own 1 of them. But some of his 1/1 Sweet Spot stuff can fetch a hundred ++

EDIT: But I suppose for me, since I am his only collector, I can set it to what I want.

His 2005 Bowman stuff looks nice, and I barely own any of it. I should start buying more!

I have three player collections.

Joe Koshansky: I've been told his '04 Red-Refractor 1/1 does not exist? If not, it would be his 2nd-year, '06 Draft Superfractor 1/1.

Garrett Atkins: I'd say any 1/1 from his first prospect products. I happen to own one of them - Future Reflections 1/1.

Matt Holliday: '99 Bowman Chrome Gold-Refractor /25. I own one as well.

The one I'll probably never own is the Kell Bat Barrel from Greats of the games. It was up on ebay and I think it sold for well over $500.

The one I'll own someday is the Leaf Kell RC.

Good ones for Clark.

IMO...

Will Clark - 1996 Select Certified Mirror Gold (have owned a few copies). This was a $1500+ card at one time. Sure there are some 1/1 cards and some promos that are pretty sought after... I'd still have to say this card is tops.

scan0008.jpg

Eddie Murray - 1996 Select Certified Mirror Gold... just a hair behind that card is the 1997 Pinnacle Totally Certified Platinum Gold. I unfortunately own neither card. The Upper Deck 500 HR Club bat card is up there too.

Darin Erstad - This is a tough one for me. I'd say the 1996 Leaf Signature Century autograph. Don't have scan but I've managed to pick up a few of them since I started collecting him in 1995. That and the 4th Bat Barrel card I am looking for. I have the first 3 cards and just need 4/4.

Bucky Jacobsen - 2004 Bowman Draft Red 1/1. I need it :) Or any of his 2005 1/1 cards.

For Bags...I'd say either his Colla Collection auto or his 92 DK Super. Neither are 1/1 but they are sure hard as hell to find and I'd be willing to pay more for those two than any other Bagwell card in existence. A board member here has the Colla so hopefully one day he needs to move it.

I have two main Player Collections:

Frank Thomas: Probably the ultimate that I own would be this:

http://s36.photobucket.com/albums/e38/a ... g&newest=1

Not the most expensive auto that I own, but it's just a great set and awesome looking card.

The Ulimate that I want to own would be any card from the 97 Leaf GU set. I think it was the first introduction of GU cards to the market. People jump all over them when they hit ebay.

Andres Galarraga: Definte ultimate would be Stadium Club Co-Signers dual auto with Larry Walker. Probably two of the greatest Rockies on a card, plus I've always been a sucker for Stadium Club.

I love this thread, it is fun to see what everyone believes is their players "Ultimate Card". I agree with quite a few and shocked by a couple others but obviously they have better knowledge of their player than I do and they are all great cards for sure.

I would say that this is Chavez's Ultimate Card. It is the highest end set he appears in and predates the Premier Logos (Chavez was not in this set) which many people have mentioned.
