Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski announced Wednesday morning that Rick Porcello has earned a spot in the starting rotation.
Porcello, 20, posted a 2.63 ERA in 12 2/3 innings this spring. He was drafted in 2007 out of high school and hasn't made a pitch above Single-A, but the Tigers apparently think he's ready for a big challenge. He posted a 2.66 ERA and 1.19 WHIP as a 19-year-old in high Single-A Lakeland last season. Porcello is an exciting talent.

In terms of people buying or selling his baseball cards, I think this sort of hurts their value. They probably would have benefited from more minor league hype in 2009.

if he's the 5th starter, he won't pitch for about 2 weeks after season starts, right? think i read somewhere that 5th starters dont pitch in the 1st 2 weeks due to scheduling or something?

A terrible mistake in my opinion. He needs more seasoning.

It's tough for me to say without seeing him this spring, but I really wanted him in AA so I could see him in Reading. :(

Does the word shelled come to anyone's mind besides me? I hope it doesn't turn out that way but having not thrown a pitch above A ball and now going to the majors is a huge leap. Lets hope Ricky can maintain his success.

This is an over generalization but this is why its a gamble to invest in elite prospects in terrible organizations. Porcello is not Major League ready and the Majors is not where you become ready.

I too think this is a mistake by the Tigers, but it sure won't stop me from listing my AFLAC Auto BGS 9.5.

usually that is the case, but the tigers open with 12 straight games.

edit: NVM, wrong team

There was a thread a few weeks ago where some were saying he could make the team were kind of laughed at but like then I always believed this might happen. Whether he is ready or if this is a good idea is yet to be seen. Also remember when and if Bonderman is ready in a few weeks he will most likely go back down. Another rookie to make the team is Ryan Perry the Tigers 1st round pick last year. Will he be the first from that draft or did somebody get called up at the end of last year?

Good time to unload my two 9.5 BGS xfractors?

I saw a refractor get $50 the other day, can't imagine him go much higher????

Dump him before he has a 5.00 ERA

I don't think I would call the Tigers a "terrible organization", but I agree that Porcello would have been better off in the minors to start the season. However, with numerous pitchers on the DL Porcello is one of their five best starting pitchers right now. Leyland has always been one to put the best team on the field even if that meant releasing a veteran and calling up a rookie. Hopefully Porcello will do well in the majors, but if he does struggle I am sure that he will be sent down when some of the other guys return from the DL.

I fear this might be another Andrew Miller situation where he is getting rushed to the Majors because the team is in desperate need of pitching. I just hope the O's dont do this with Matusz, Arrieta, or Tillman

Listed 2 high end cards of him yesterday. An orange ref and and Elite Gold Auto /5.

What prices do you think I can get on those 2? I listed them BIN/BO.

Should I sell with this hype or hold? I am not a big flipper...advice is appreciated.

Sell. He probably needs more time in the minors and will probably get roughed up in the majors.
