People are stupid. THey're not utilizing his name to sell a product - they're selling a product that was completely legal when produced, that happens to feature him.

I saw that this morning as well and had a similar reaction.

Seems to me that if Wilson took money from Topps for that product, then that's the issue that should be affecting his eligibility. The university can't possibly have any legal recourse to go after an eBay seller for selling a legally licensed Russell Wilson baseball card... can they?

And somebody raised a good point in the comments of that article -- what about Brandon Wheeden or Oklahoma State? He's got a 2002 Bowman Chrome autograph. Seems like the same thing would apply there.

And one more thing... I love the wording of the e-mail: "NCAA regulations prohibit you..."

How in the world is an eBay seller subject to the authority of NCAA regulations?

This makes me want to go buy a Russell Wilson card and then put it right back up on eBay so that they can send me that message and I can tell them to go pound sand.

NCAA rules prohibit cards being sold during NCAA student athlete status. The only exception is Team USA. You can produce cards and give them away and that is legal, and if the people who the cards are given to sell them that is still legal. This is just a silly letter from Wisconsin. I've made cards of NCAA athletes, and am pretty well versed on the legality of producing them.

Could this not just be an attempt by U of W to try and protect his NCAA eligability by showing they are making an effort with regards to the card(s)? Not necessairly expecting (or even caring) if these cards are pulled down, or sold...?

I know next to nothing about college sports but I do know that the NCAA is easily one of the most backwards associations in operation.

Never heard of Wilson but I do have some 2010 Bowman stuff. I'm with Chad. I'm tempted to list my base cards to see if I can have some fun.
