Who offered ellsbury more money? I heard a rumor that the mariners did, but they denied any large offer to him. Did I miss this somewhere or is it just speculation

It was a rumor, never confirmed. The old "They were thought to have" I don't think anyone would give ellsbury 9 years, that would be a bad bad idea. Even the yanks deal is risky with his health, but not 9 years.
Ellsbury at 39, making 20+, no way that was offered.

The Yanks had a crowded OF even before the Beltran signing. I think he wanted guaranteed F/T work.
Prices this offseason are just ridiculous.

Pay attention to recent offseasons. Yanks haven't been going after big name players for the past few years. This year they did because they freed up a lot of money.

(Beltran and Ellsbury both took less money to come to the Yanks btw)

Plus the 130 million is more than 140 million in texas. Choo got paid more in Texas than in NY.

I certainly pay attention brother. Like anyone can read, he has more money in his pocket by going with Texas. What I was saying, if you read into it, money aside he preferred Texas over NY. That is what I was referring to, per my previous comment.

But there are so many more factors that go into this. He got more money, Texas is closer to competing for a WS, Their OF is not crowded.

Some players just don't want to play under the microscope of NY. I'm extremely glad that Choo ended up going to Texas and not NY because Choo is a very average player in my eyes. He gets on base yes but he doesn't have very good power, doesn't have very good speed, and doesn't play fantastic defense.

I think Ellsbury >>>> Choo 10 times out of 10.

I know how google works. I follow the Mariners too. There was nothing ever confirmed beyond the "interested" stage (no years or figures).

Rising salaries have been the norm. Beyond a couple of high profile players the FA market this offseason has been so-so. You have teams willing to shell out big money for the "best" player on the market. It also doesn't help that some teams have pie in the sky trade demands for semi-star players. It just makes teams more willing to fork over a bit more money than they normally would.

I know how google works. I follow the Mariners too. There was nothing ever confirmed beyond the "interested" stage (no years or figures).

It was confirmed that they offered (wasn't 9 years like originally thought) but it was 6-7 years with 20+ million a year (I believe 21-22 million per).
That was confirmed. Feel free to disagree but it was relayed by many many news outlets and reporters. They offered him a deal but not 9 years like i originally thought.

TV contracts are huge for some teams. There is plenty of money out there, marketing, new stadiums etc. Some use the additional cash to upgrade while others pocket the money.
I don't think MLB needs to worry about popularity .

They are lazy excuses as to why one would not like baseball. I've heard similar excuses about hockey. "Too fast", "don't understand rules", "too much fighting" etc. You can't please everyone. Trying to find gimmicks to win people over is a mistake. Hello Fox glowing puck.......

Yeah, you can never please everyone.Isn't MLB playing games in another country this year?

Try listening to ESPN radio April through June.They rarely even talk about MLB anymore, and the hosts admit it because of the reasons I mentioned above.All the same old NBA talk has gotten so bad I have to turn the radio off.It's hard for me to even watch NBA anymore, ESPN saturating their outlets with it only drives me further away.It's the same old talk about Bryant or the Lakers over and over.<yawn>

Of course, if the Masters or British Open is being played, then ESPN radio will torture listeners with lame golf/where is Woods ranked analysis non stop.I'd rather watch my grass grow than watch golf.It's gotten so bad I've ditched ESPN radio for Fox Sports radio, which at least doesn't make me want to take a machete to my ears.

MLB is in Australia this coming season. Interesting that both teams had some bad blood this season.

I stopped listening to ESPN radio for the reason above. I listen to XM MLB on the drive to and from work. Much,much better.
Oh yeah, the don't talk hockey on ESPN either....

Interesting deal seems to me like he commanded more money and length of contract than his play deserves. Would have rather they resigned Cruz or Hamilton last year for that kind of money.
Daniels as all but blown up the Rangers lineups that made it to back to back WS.
