I don't get how anyone can say defense doesn't matter when comparing players.

Now? not so much. As a Mets fan, i am tired of him sprinkling singles all over the field.
He's more concerned about his pretty face than he is about baseball.
i understand Home Runs are not EVERYTHING, but he has EIGHT (8) this entire SEASON,
that is a joke and a half.
At work, we have the "+/-" game. Every time someone hits a HR (not the elite HR hitters mind you)
we yell out "+2" if that player has hit his 10th, meaning that he has 2 more than David White

Melvin Mora, Billy Rowell, Jason Berken, and some baseballs for David Wright.![]()

defense is huge when comparing players...but is it a big enough factor to say longo is a top player while hitting 267

LOL
On base percentage is much more significant than average. Defense is just as important. Every base hit taken away (over what an average defender would make) in the field is as valuable as a hit at the plate. Obviously both of these concepts are well over your head.

Thats MeFromKoufaxtoEdwin said:AndyDuke, your cause is a noble one in trying to spread statistical information to the masses, but the truth is that most people dont understand any of it or really just dont care. There is so much information out there that shows why batting average is an awful way of judging a player and we are heading towards reliably quantifying defense. Most fans have stuff such as batting average and fielding percentage drilled into their heads at an early age, and its really hard to get away from that mindset.
People arguing against Longoria dont realize how much of an impact he has defensively, nor will they believe it when shown the facts. But, just for fun, Longo is worth almost 1.5 wins according to UZR and almost 2 wins according to FRAA. Basically, the guy is an absolutely elite defender at a premium position, which catapults his value over guys like Ryan Braun (who is a negative fielder at one of the 2 least demanding positions on the field), Mark Reynolds (who has had a superior offensive year, but grades out very poorly with the glove), and Miguel Cabrera (due to his average play at the easiest position on the diamond). Here is a list of the most valuable players so far this year:

Basically, Longoria is a stud, but not as much this year in the traditional "statistics". He hasnt had a great offensive year, but he is still an above average offensive player and a stud defender. That combines to create a top 10-15 player in the game year in and year out.

one slump? the guy has been sucking since may.
right now, easily the most overrated player in baseball
Hes not taking that crown from David Wright quite yet
I know the Mets are absolutely awful, but come on, Wright is easily one of the best players in baseball.
idk if i could put wright in that category as one of the best in baseball but he is better than longoria

OBP is more significant, but it isn't like his 36th best in the AL OBP, which you cited earlier, is something amazing.
