May be old news, but I just saw highlights saying Strasburg was pulled in the 8th today with pain in his lower ribs. Think he's got delivery mechanics problems? Hmm...

The first signs of him becoming the next Mark Prior. If I had anything of his I would sell ASAP.

Sure hope it isn't serious. Can't find anything on Google yet.

He had a great outing overall, although for once he didn't strike out 10+.

But he's 13-0. :)

His line: 7.2 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 6 K's

I believe this was his final regular season start.

His stats:

13-0, 1.15 ERA, 109.2 IP, 60 H, 14 ER, 20 BB's, 186 K's (wow).

Yep, sell now. He's obviously a complete bust whose career is destined to be nothing but injury plagued. ::facepalm::

The guy's just finished pitching his last game of an awesome season. He's just worn out. He'll be good to go by the time the big show rolls around.

From http://www3.signonsandiego.com/stories/ ... strasburg/ :
Aztecs win, but Strasburg leaves with possible injury

4:20 p.m. May 20, 2009
Stephen Strasburg - Bruce K. Huff / Union-Tribune

San Diego State defeated New Mexico 2-1 on Wednesday afternoon in the Mountain West Conference baseball tournament at Fort Worth, Texas, but the victory did not come easily, nor without a scare that could impact the team's postseason hopes.

All-America pitcher Stephen Strasburg left the game with two out in the eighth inning after the team's athletic trainer went to the mound. There was no early word on what happened to Strasburg, who has one-third of the Aztecs' 39 wins this season (39-19).

Strasburg allowed just three hits with one walk and six strikeouts as he improved to 13-0 with a national-best 1.24 ERA. SDSU closer Addison Reed allowed a run on three straight two-out hits in the ninth inning and then hit a batter to load the bases before retiring the final hitter to record his 18th save, most in the nation.

The victory moved the Aztecs into a winners' bracket showdown Thursday night against the winner of Wednesday night's game between Utah and top-seeded (and host) TCU. If the Aztecs win that game, they would advance to the championship round of the tournament, which awards an automatic berth in the NCAA tournament to its winner.

The Aztecs have not advanced to the NCAAs since 1990.

SDSU had a frustrating afternoon offensively, stranding 11 runners over the final six innings. But the Aztecs scored in the sixth on a two-out double by Mitch Blackburn and added what proved to be a needed insurance run in the ninth on a wild pitch.

Strasburg's Injury Not Serious
A few posters on a previous post spoke of a possible injury to San Diego State pitcher Stephen Strasburg, the presumptive No. 1 pick on June 9, who started tonight for the Aztecs in the Mountain West Tournament. I just got off the phone with SDSU sports information officer Dave Kuhn, who said that Strasburg's injury is not serious. "He had a little back cramp," Kuhn said. "Just a cramp in his back. On the lower side. He's walking around now, he's fine. He just needed some Gatorade."

When I read this post the first thing I thought of was something else I read today. From today's ESPN SportsNation chat

Nick (DC): Any chance the Nats pass on Strasburg?

SportsNation Jim Callis: (2:19 PM ET ) Only if he gets hurt.

Glad to hear it's just a back cramp.

Wouldn't it be a giant kick in the nuts if he's playing it down until that bonus is secured?

Bonus paid and first pitch out the gate and Strasburg ends up rolling on the mound. Trainer comes in and comes to find out it's some underlying tear of the muscles from the ribcage.

THAT would suck.

You're forgetting that his team has some playoff action coming up - he's not done yet.

And besides, he has to pass a physical!

I would tend to think that a major league team (or any level time for that matter) MIGHT make their players receive physicals before signing or giving them any sort of money, much less letting them play.

How's Strasburg's overall pitch count for the season? I can't find that stat online.
He's pitched 102 innings over his 14 games, which is about 7.2 innings per game.
That's more than most Major Leaguers average.
But since he's so dominant, I would not think his pitch count goes too high.
I hate it when high school and college coaches overuse pitchers, leading to a possible Minor/Major League career full of injuries.

I am concerned over pitch count as well. He does only pitch every 6-7 days rather than every 5 days so he has a little more recovery.

Has Prior really been relegated to being a hyperbolic cautionary tale already? It's far from the first time that comparison has been drawn on this board, and every time it is almost laughable. People seem to forget that Prior was one of the top pitchers in the league at the age of 22-23. While he had a string of bad luck with injuries, it isn't difficult to argue that the majority of his pitching related injuries stem from being overworked during 2004. Between 2003 and 2004, his inning load increased somewhere in the neighborhood of 60-70 innings if. Such a dramatic increase is almost certain trouble for such a young arm.

Pretty sure Gwynn has been around the game a few years, and knows what and what not to do.
I'm not worried.

Agreed. Gwynn has always seemed to be one of the great ambassadors for the game, and I would think that he would make the long term health of his players a priority. Unfortunately, as Austin pointed out, there are coaches out there who don't, and are willing to ride their ace as far as possible, regardless of the potential for long term damage to the player's career. That's the root cause for the arm problems that caused Tanner Scheppers to fall to the Pirates in the second round last year, and then subsequently caused the Pirates to let him go unsigned due to long term injury concerns.
