Here's an arguement that I've heard before and i have to say, I kind of agree with:
The NY, Chicago, California teams, as well as Atlanta, all benefit from playing in HUGE markets which they can get HUGE television contracts for. The problem is, television is suppossed to be a Federally regulated institution. So if these teams are making all this money off of government-owned channel TV contracts, then that money should not go to just them. It may look like socialism, but it's still the facts.
Let's face it though, salary caps do not parity make. The NFL has a salary cap, yet there have been more 3-time and 2-time champs in the last 20 years in football than in baseball. The Red Sox won twice in this decade, but look at the consistant success of teams like the Patriots, Colts, Steelers, Packers, Rams and Eagles in the last decade.
On the other hand, the Yankees, simply because of thier money, this year have a chance to circumvent the rules in basically taking away a deserved 1st Round pick from the Blue Jays. Any other class-A FA they sign will similarly screw the team, b/c the Yankees have the money.
