Here's an arguement that I've heard before and i have to say, I kind of agree with:

The NY, Chicago, California teams, as well as Atlanta, all benefit from playing in HUGE markets which they can get HUGE television contracts for. The problem is, television is suppossed to be a Federally regulated institution. So if these teams are making all this money off of government-owned channel TV contracts, then that money should not go to just them. It may look like socialism, but it's still the facts.

Let's face it though, salary caps do not parity make. The NFL has a salary cap, yet there have been more 3-time and 2-time champs in the last 20 years in football than in baseball. The Red Sox won twice in this decade, but look at the consistant success of teams like the Patriots, Colts, Steelers, Packers, Rams and Eagles in the last decade.

On the other hand, the Yankees, simply because of thier money, this year have a chance to circumvent the rules in basically taking away a deserved 1st Round pick from the Blue Jays. Any other class-A FA they sign will similarly screw the team, b/c the Yankees have the money.

I love the Yankees. They provide an endless source of comedy fodder

They're due for another 3-4 year World Series run.

This is the way I see it.

The Yankees have the right to run their franchise any way they see fit. It's the Steinbrenners baby, and if they want to put all of their money back into it, they have that right. In my opinion, more ballclubs should have that same thinking in my opinion. Not saying I think everyone should spend Yankee money, but a few more million here and then wouldn't hurt anything in my opinion.

You don't have to like what they Yankees are doing, but they have every right to do so.

But I ask you this. WHY BITCH ABOUT IT? It's not like they are winning every year right?

The Yankees haven't won anything substantial SINCE starting to spend out of the ass. Have they won a World Series recently? Or even been to one in the last few years? No, they haven't. Yet some people are acting like they are just buying the title every season, which they aren't.

It's not working for them, and hasn't been, so shouldn't all the people whining about it saying they are ruining the universe be laughing their asses off hoping they continue to do what they are doing so they keep imploding and losing? That's what I would be doing if I didn't like the Yankees. I would have the thinking that they are getting what they deserve for spending almost 90 million dollars on the likes of AJ Burnett.

Let the Yankees spend all they want. It's their right. But don't put a salary cap on every franchise because that would be just wrong.
Their payroll is always at the top or number 1. They spent on key free agents during the dynasty and well you know the rest. Research dude.

Of course they spent on free agents. But they didn't spend ridiculously over the top. They haven't won anything since they started spending ridiculously over the top.

They always paid higher for free agents. This is no different. They have more money then other francises so they offer more.

Paid for Cone/Wetteland/El Duque/Bernie/ I know they overpaid for these guys off the top of my head.

This is the perfect example in favor of a salary cap to me. Look at the football teams you listed - Indianapolis, Green Bay, Pittsburgh - these teams would have no chance of being competive without a salary cap. The cap itself doesn't guarantee success - you still have to have good management and guys that stay healthy and come through for you on the field. But without the cap you're not even in the game. It buys you a seat at the table - what you do with it from there is up to you.

They traded for Cone(7/28/95 for three stinker prospects and subsequently resigned him as their own free agent). They traded for Wetteland (5/5/95 for Fernando Seguigol and cash). They signed Bernie Williams as a skinny kid out of PR. Get your facts straight.

Oh, and if you're referring to Bernie Williams signing with the Yankees when he was a Free Agent, then that is a cheap shot. How can you fault them for re-signing their own player, who just happened to be their franchise player at the time?

Man, you people reach to make a point.

What am I missing here?

The only way I see it happening is if something similar to the NHL happens because of the bad economy. If enough teams are struggling or about to fail, then the owners will get together and do it.

When was Bernie a FA? Also, what team did El Duque start for? Those aren't free agents.

Someone please tell me which team won the 2008 WS?

Now, please tell me the payroll cost of that team?

High payroll does NOT equal WS ring.

You're right. But the salaries these players are making is ridiculous.

If I were a a MLB player, I would try and make the most I can. Careers are short and they can end quickly with a bad enough injury. I would want to position myself well just in case that career-ending injury comes about.

So, am I in favor of a salary cap? No.

Do I favor performance based salary? Yes. The salary should have several tiers to it. When a player reaches certain milestones then they should receive an increase.

For those who work and are in favor of a salary cap, I think there should be a cap on [enter your profession here]

As for the last point you mentioned:There is one unless your company chooses to pay you more which they will most likely not do unless they just feel like wasting money they don't have to.And about 100% of them don't feel that generous.

Here is the way I look at it.The players make more money than they should. Why should they make as much as they do?All anyone ever has to argue is that they can and do so that is just the way things are and is a good enough reason. But its really not.Its just stupid really. All this for playing a game. Its dumb.

I mean...if you want to get technical...there are probably a lot of things I can do that A-Rod can't.So I don't buy this crap that he should make the money he does for playing baseball because I am not as good at it as he is.Should I get paid a crazy amount because I can be a better plumber than he could?Or a better welder or electrician or cable installer?Besides...most normal people have an every day job that lasts year around.Does that mean that by comparison that they should make twice what A-Rod does or 3 or 4 times what he does?Because they don't have a seasonal job?

The point is...I don't really care what the yankees pay.If they want to go nuts thats fine.I also do not lose any sleep knowing that there are grown men who play a game for a living and make more money than I ever will in my entire life in only the span of a year.

But I do think if they don't get this money thing under control it won't be like Sam Banks was saying...you should just stop going and supporting them.It will be more of not being able to go whether you want to or not type of thing. Please one of you tell me you honestly are foolish enough to believe if the contracts keep going up that it will not cost you more to go to a game or even cost more for MLB merchandise or things of that nature.

Oh...and as for whoever purchased the bleacher seats for $12...tell me...was that a package or just a random game you got them for at that price?Thats what I thought.

How is this a "fail"? Bernie came up through their system and Hernandez was signed as a rookie free agent with the Yanks...

I was refering to the person who stated otherwise.

I am totally aware of what he was quoting. I love that movie.

I was talking about this. I just quoted the wrong post.

I was talking to jcmint. Because he said these things and was called out on it.
