Troy Smith...not the answer, but hella better than Alex!

The 49ers, could have and perhaps should have lost today's game against the Rams. Penalties that cancelled out 3 TDs and 1 Interception. The team definitely isn't all on the same page, but a switch from Alex to Troy Smith is a f'ing BLESSING for long time 49ers fan.

Hell, I could care less if David Carr was the starter and stunk up the joint because we ALL know Alex isn't IT! Give somebody else a chance, anyone, the waterboy even!! Alex doesn't have the instincts, the accuracy nor the determination/drive/fire (for a complete game let alone a whole season). Every year, I pray the team would just get rid of him (just like the Raiders across the bay dumped JaMarcus Russell), but for some god damn reason, they kept Alex Smith! Why oh why!

I miss the days when Shawn Hill would throw his side arm softball passes OR Trent Dilfer would scream and yell and then get picked or sacked (funny as hell) OR any other starter from the pst 6 seasons: Tim Rattay, Ken Dorsey, Cody Pickett, Chris Weinke, JT O'Sullivan, and Now Troy Smith.

Since 2005, when Alex Smith starts, the 49ers are 17-30 compared to all others at 17-25...I'll take the others anyday.

Hopefully his days are numbered and his ass is gone next year. Troy may not be the answer, but he sure gives it his all and hits his marks (for now).

eh, as a season ticket holder - I've seen the good Alex Smith and the bad Alex Smith. I think that he will find a job on a different team and possibly succeed. He just needs better coaching as he has all the tools.

However, I do agree that Troy Smith should start for the rest of the year. However, I think that David Carr should be cut, Alex Smith be put as the backup, and Nate Davis gets promoted from the practice squad to be the 3rd stringer.

I really expected more from the 49ers and Alex Smith this year. I think the NFL experience has been a little unfair to Smith. 5 different coaches and 7 different OC's during his 6 years cannot be a recipe for success for anyone. No one piece of that team has been able to be consistent this year including the defense.

I too see Smith getting a back up role somewhere else and finding a way to become a decent journeyman player.


May as well hand the rest of the year to Troy. He has nothing to lose and everything to gain and will play the game without fear. Is he the long term solution?

I think you could also say the 49ers should have blown out the rams, all those things add up to a 21 point+ swing, this game shouldn't have been close.

Alex Smith will succeed somewhere else. Troy Smith surprised me a lot but it's been 2 games. We'll see what happens this week against Tampa Bay. It looks like the niners will now win a few more games and not get a decent QB in the draft. I just hope Singletary isn't brought back as it appears he's over his head.

I hope Smith succeeds somewhere else, but I still don't think he has a chance. He was beaten too much as a puppy.

I'm really starting to doubt Singletary though. He's a good inspirational coach, but the problem is the team has really crappy communication. Taking ridiculous delay of games, having to blow 3 timeouts in the first quarter just about every game, extremely poor clock mgmt, etc. The team has the talent but for some reason they just look lost on the field and when it comes down to it, that falls on the coaching staff.

No, Alex Smith was medically cleared, but Troy Smith was named the starter. I think it's a good decision.

I, too, had high hopes for the 49ers - with Alex "managing" the game/score (not winning or losing it, but just managing it - sort of like how Shaun Hill and JT O'Sullivan were tagged), but the overall team has really been disappointing especially the defensive (or lack of it). As a native SFer, we hear the 5/7/6 excuse all the time, but you can't teach what the guy can't understand which I guess is why Jimmy Ray's offense was so predictable. The coaches don't draw up plays where you throw the ball 5 yards short or 3 yards behind the receiver (not just this year but all 5 years).

Anyway, if you folks see the light at the end of the tunnel for this guy...cool, great...for me, I hope it's over for him in SF. Heck Singletary probably won't make it to the 2011 season either (especially if they don't make the playoffs).

Definitely was a huge break. Only thing Otogwe really did wrong on that play was to draw so much contact. A minor bump and it probably is just chalked up as an errant throw. Refs have a hard time ignoring that big of a bump when it's in the open field. Especially that referee crew, who had really gotten into a rhythm calling penalties on Sunday afternoon.

Man oh man, that game was boring. I felt like I took a horse tranquilizer going into the 3rd quarter. My wife fell asleep, and I found myself more interested watching the IND/NE game on stat tracker (not even live) than watching the game on TV.

I'm still dumbfounded they gave up on their strength (running game) against what? the 30th ranked running defense? in the first quarter?????

make sure you drink a lot of coffee first. I started snoozing at the game. Run up the middle for no gain. Run up the middle for a gain of 2 yards. incomplete pass.
