I've got a question, what exactly are vending boxes? I've received some in the past but I have no idea what they were used for or how they were sold back in the day.

They were used by vendors or jobbers to fill usually quarter operated machines. Put a quarter in and out pops a couple of cards. I haven't seen one in years but the ones I saw were always by the candy machines in grocery stores. They were just big boxes with various cards from that set. No SPs, hits or autos to worry about. Just base cards. Saved money with less packaging. Set builders used to like them as well.

People feel the same way about 80's cards as they do about their kids. They wouldn't take a million dollars for the ones they got but they wouldn't give a nickel for any more. :lol:

500 ct boxof cards, no wax, no gum, no wrappers, no frills. a great way to get mass quantity at a low low price.

Best off buying a sealed case as the boxes themselves are not very good at providing long term protection for the cards inside

I remember in first grade that so many kids had Garbage Pail Kids and were so distracted by them and trading them, that our teacher banned us from bringing them to class.

I bought a couple a few years ago... I opened and looked through them but they have all the original cards in them. They are probably the only 80's cards that I will never get rid off (aside from the key 80's RCs, and any errors).

and be forewarned that a case is 24 vending boxes. thats 12,000 cards. the case is about 50 pounds lol

Thanks for the info, that's why I love these boards so much. Almost seems like cheating to buy vending boxes to complete sets. :lol:

it depends on what you want out of your particular rip.

the vending boxes are not in any kind of order, so you still have to sort. lol
the wax packs lose at least one card (the wax stained back card), if not a second card to the gum inside.
the cello packs have issues with tight wrapping and/or the gum
the rack packs are awesome and are probably your best bet for minty cards

Anyway, I did find an Al Leiter RC, (which could be the error version, I have to see). Also found some Topps Rookie Trophy cards and all star cards.

Pretty fun!

as for the Leiter error. if you can see the Yankees Logo on his jersey, its the corrected version

Thinking of 80's: Anybody remember the Battle Beeast toyline where you could rub a heat senstive sticker on the figures chest ? The symbols would represent either fire, wood or water and could be used in a rock, paper, scissors type game—fire beat wood, wood beat water, water beat fire

I got my first pack in 1985. My uncle bought it for me at the LCS. It was a 85 T rack pack with Dale Murphy on top.

I had an experience in late 87 at that same LCS. I wanted to buy all of his Braves team sets he had. We made a deal and he decided to throw in a 900 ct box full of crappy last place team sets that he couldnt sell. He had pulled the Sandbergs, Ecks, and Dawsons. I took them anyway thinking maybe I could dump them on someone. Well I couldnt, so in 1992 I realized I still had them and pulled out 37 87 D Cubs team sets that were missing the Dawson, Eck and Sandberg. Decided to go ahead and pull out these guys names Maddux, Moyer, and Palmeiro just in case.
