I'd buy it and probably not say anything.

If I was the seller, I would appreciate it if someone clued me in....but in the end it's my mistake. I would sell it at the price I had listed. If you don't know your stuff, it's your loss.

+1

Seriously. He's supposed to know his stuff as a seller. It's his loss and it's the buyer's gain. Indeed, as a seller I'd like someone to tell me the truth but it would be my own stupid fault for not knowing something like that. If you don't know how to put in a toilet, don't become a plumber!

Dealer at a show: buy it, flip it, at the same show if possible

Kid selling crap at a garage sale: help him out and tell him about it

Basically, if you're fronting like you know better (i.e. you've set up at a show), then you'd better REALLY know better. If I think you probably don't know better, but for good reason (you're not doing this every day, it's just a hobby), I'll probably help you out.

I'd buy it.

If it were at a table with no price (where the guy fields offers like a lot of small shows do), I'd ask the guy what he wanted for it. If He honestly had no idea what he had and said "Name a price", I'd be more likely to say "That's worth way too much for me to even offer." At that point, he's probably inquire about its value, and I'd most likely tell him.
Now, with the card in a $5 set price box, then he has already determined that $5 is what would satisfy him for that card -- so why not?

You have the responsibility to price your items accurately as a seller. If you do not, well as the saying goes, "tough ***** said the kitty when the milk went dry". If you want the most out of a card you sell, look it up. The internet is a great tool.

There was a show I went to recently and the seller had a 1989 Fleer Randy Johnson for $1.00. I looked at it closely and realized it was the "Marlboro Ad" variation. I told the seller what he had and he thanked me.

I am weird about these things. In the past I had a similar situation with a nonsport autograph. Dealer had it in a case that said $10 for anything in case. Show had just opened, otherwise the card in the case would have been GONE!

I wanted the card (can never really say I NEED a card), but my conscience wouldn't let me try to buy it. I told the dealer that the card regularly sold on ebay for $150+ at the time. He looked at the card and grabbed it up. I felt bad since he was a friendly guy. He was very thankful and offered to give me one of the $10 cards for free. Even then, I declined (I know, geekwimp :ugeek: ). He did give me a discount on a box later in the show and thanked me again.

I guess I knew that if I had gotten the card for the error price, I would have never felt right about it.

How about this:

I know a guy who was set up at a flea market and some yahoo came by with 100+ 1909-1911 T-206's and he wanted $500. The buyer did the same thing I would have done and the same thing all of you would have done. I don't even have to say it. Now those 100+ T-206's (Cobb and Mathewson among others) are all slabbed.

So to answer your question, I would buy the $5 Red Crusade.

However, I do have a few honest bones in my body. Just last month I had my camera fixed and the charge was simply $5 but should have been $50. The guy just made a mistake when punching in numbers on his credit card machine. I told him and he was very thankful. It made my day that I was honest to him.

To me there's a difference between a guy hitting the wrong keys on a computer, and a guy who doesn't research what he's selling.

If I'm undercharged or get the wrong change when I'm paying for something (due to human error), I let them know and get it corrected as soon as I notice.

I bought an Artifacts Lou Gehrig Jumbo Bat card /25 from a guy I deal with regularly for $20. I did feel marginally guilty about that, especially after I sold it for $500.

Granted that is a significant difference in value....but isn't that why most anyone would spend hours searching through those boxes? You're either looking for some pc card or some amazing deal like that.

I'd have no problem buying it at $5 bucks if it was a dealer or someone in the hobby. It really is their responsibility to understand the hobby their business is in, and honestly in most of these instances, they'd probably think you're the sucker for paying $5 for a 90's insert and I'm sure that's not costing them sleep.
Now if it was someone I had a relationship with prior, that most likely changes things, or someone who maybe doesn't know the hobby looking to sell some stuff and trusting you to be honest - then I'd feel bad......but that situation at a show - I'm buying and then trading or selling.

Ok, there's no excuse for him not knowing better. IT'S LOU GEHRIG!

Is he good, or have really high expectations? I'm not very up to date with prospects until they make headlines after being called up.

Lol. Some people are high on him, but I think he's a bust. 5 - 10 games in the majors, tops.

Also heard that Gehrig guy is prone to injury and misses a fair amount of games. Unreliable.

It's his price, I'd pay it.

He should know what he is selling, and what they are worth. That is his loss!

Yeah I don't know what to say about that. The guy is typically overpriced on everything. I asked how much he wanted for it and he said the infamous, "Make an offer", to which I said the old counter to that, "I have no idea what it's worth, what do you want for it?" When he replied $20 I almost fell over. I've seen him many times since, but have never mentioned it.

At this same show (different time, same location) there was a guy set up who had one of those UD bust things they made a few years back and it was marked, "Ichiro $50." I thought it must be just a regular Ichiro, but I opened it anyway to take a peek. Nope. Not only was it an auto'd Ichiro, it was the Platinum version, which I think there were only 10 or 15 made of. I got like $550 for that puppy.
