your peers are the ones to call you the super collector and you often get that title by your dedication to whatever it is your collecting.

this is absolutely correct. Calling oneself a "Super collector" is not cool

Looking through the thread - I think I have to agree with these sentiments as well.

Also, when I think of "Super collector's" - I think of the guys on this site that collect anything and everything of a team/player. I think of the guys collecting 100% base, trying to track down every insert and parallel possible and picking up oddball cards. To me that's a big part, as opposed to just having a stash of super-high end and 1/1's because you have the means to afford such cards.

I don't think anyone should be considering themselves supercollectors of anything. Sounds a little conceited to me to label yourself a supercollector. To me the term should be given to someone by their collecting peers. I personally think there are plenty of supercollectors in this forum, but there is no exact science to how I determine who is or not. I guess it comes down to what others feel the term means or how one attains that status.

Personally, I think it is an overused term and is quite meaningless to true collectors.

I basically agree with this. There seems to be people more interested in the recognition than the collection itself.

I couldn't care less about the term, although I will admit to having used it. There is some value in communicating that I'm not just casually looking for a few Vizquel cards... I'm crazy-serious about it. I see a lot of people mention that they're looking for this or that, but it doesn't always make a big impression on me. However periodically I come across something unique and recall that there's a "supercollector" as nutty as me who will probably want it. So I bundle it up and ship it out.

For example I recently came across a source for some "Colla" postcards of Cleveland Indians, and remembered that the Fryman "supercollector" still needed one. He's only missing 10 or so and this was one. So I set it up and made sure he got it. Without understanding the level of commitment he has, it would never have made an impact on me and I would have never made the connection to help him out.

So to me it's about approach. If you get off on calling yourself a supercollector and that's how you measure your manhood, then you're a nob. If it's a term other people use in referring to you ("the JJ Supercollector would like that"), that's harmless. If you use in order to network and convey your level of seriousness, I think that's ok too.

another thing about a true super collector is that your not even just collecting your own guy anymore.. you search through boxes and come across cards for all the other sick collections and collectors you respect and wonder if they have or need them. You have such an awareness of rarity of items that alot of times you pick up stuff just to help your fellow super collectors. Nothing you do is about BV or profit but purely for the love and passion of collecting.

To me...call yourself what you like. I do agree with the Vizquel Collector that you need to convey to others that you are a serious collector. But I also agree it's kind of hard to really put a finger on what exactly makes a super collector. IMO, it would have to be quantity, rarity, and effort. Because if you came to me and said you had 300 different Griffey Jr. base cards and you called yourself a supercollector, I'd think of someone like Magic Pappa(a true super collector IMO), and then I'd laugh.

You need to pay more attention then. There are many collections on this board that would fit the supercollector definition.

Like I said its kind of a fake title when its given to yourself. I did this mainly to spark discussion. One reason is because I had a guy tell me he was the Descalso super collector so I asked what he had. He then told me he had 15 Bowman Base and 2 autographs so I told him what I had and he changed his signature and his collection went up on eBay.

Really? There are most certainly some guys here that have absolutely ABSURD collections that would be virtually impossible to match. I forget everyone's exact usernames, but several of the collections (Juan Gonzalez, Grace, Griffey, McGwire) here must be in the top 1% of player collections out there. Calfas is another guy that blows my mind and set the bar out of reach. (How in the hell could somoene build a complete set of First Pitch Previews AND hold down a job?) I know that I'm forgetting some others, but someone that has literally thousands of hours in hunting and collecting to build these massive/complete collections is most certainly at the top of their game. So use whatever term you want, but there's few more impressive. In several cases the ONLY way to duplicate what they've built would be to buy large existing collections.

Does being a supercollector only work with player collectors? Like for example, if you completed the HOF baseball game used collection are you a supercollector?
