Yankees Reach Agreement With Russell Martin
By Tim Dierkes [December 14, 2010 at 9:32am CST]
The Yankees have reached an agreement with catcher Russell Martin, tweets MLB.com's Alden Gonzalez. With Jorge Posada moving into a designated hitter role next year, Martin should be the Yankees' starting catcher. Since Martin has less than five years of service time, he's under team control for 2012 as an arbitration eligible player.

Martin, 28 in February, hit .248/.347/.332 in 387 plate appearances for the Dodgers before being non-tendered this month. His season ended in August due to a hairline fracture in his right hip. Martin was once a rising star for the Dodgers, but he turned down a $4.2MM offer (an $850K pay cut) to return in 2011. He's represented by Matt Colleran.

So when is the time to list the Martin collection? Now or start of season?

Any Yanks fans want this?

Wow, so can we now officially say bye bye Montero?
I'm pretty sure signing a guy with a serious hip injury that squats for a living is not going to signal the dawn of a new era. So, no, Montero is staying, that is unless Josh Johnson or Felix Hernandez becomes available. And if anyone they're likely trading Romine.

As a Yankee fan, this scares me. Give Montero the chance. Now that Lee is gone, I am sure they will dangle Montero in front of anyone looking to part with a half-way decent pitcher.

Do you think the Yankees would sign him if he has a serious hip injury that was long term? Not a chance. He had surgery and is healed. He'll be their starting catcher in 2011 and beyond.

Why people still think that Montero can catch is beyond me. He isn't a good catcher and is blocked by multiple players at 1B (Tex), DH (Jorge), and longer term DH (Arod).

He is their main trade bait for any top arm that will be on the block. Guaranteed.

All I know is I'm happy I sold my Montero stash when he shot up earlier this year. Who do you guys think the Yankees will get? Garza? Greinke?

Martin will be just fine. A little HGH, Some Winstrol and Deca. He'll be as good as new! Y'all will be saying "Jesus who?"

Yup. Any time you bring up Montero possibly not being with the Yankees it makes people mad.

Bullpen help. Don't see Tampa trading with the Yanks, ever. Can't see Greinke dealing with his issues better in NY than Toronto, Texas, or KC.

Probably because as of Sat Dec 11, 2010, 3:38 pm, when you posted it, there was no actual source, and you were speculating. It also had to do with the backlash of your other thread title, Crawford to the Angels.

Unfortunately sometimes when people like myself (and jaypers of course) get inside info, we know things before an "actual sourse" reports it. In all seriousness though, there was no speculation about Martin to the Yankees. Crawford was all speculation.

You had no "inside info," you merely posted a link to a Daily News article.

Please.
