Just saw it on ESPN. Sucks, he was having a great year. He just can't get his breakout year.

Ouch. Did they say what it is?

He really was off to a great start.

Rickie Weeks will see a specialist after injuring his left wrist during Sunday's game.
Weeks has had right wrist problems in the past, and he'll see the same doctor that operated on him at the end of 2006. If he lands on the DL, the Brewers figure to go to Craig Counsell as their primary second baseman and call up Hernan Iribarren as a backup. Mat Gamel to third and Bill Hall to second would be too much of a downgrade defensively, and Alcides Escobar isn't doing much offensively in Triple-A.

ESPN just reported Carlos Delgado is going to have surgery. He'll be out most of the season.

Weeks out for season
By Tom Haudricourt of the Journal Sentinel
May. 18, 2009 5:00 p.m.

St. Louis - General manager Doug Melvin just gave us the very bad news that second baseman Rickie Weeks is out for the season with the wrist injury he suffered Sunday.

Weeks has a torn tendon sheath in his left wrist that must be repaired surgically. The recovery time for that surgery is 4-6 months.

It's a tough blow for the Brewers and also for Weeks, who was off to the best start of his career with a .272 batting average, nine homers, 24 RBI and a .517 slugging percentage.

It's the same injury Weeks had to his right wrist late in the 2006 season. He had surgery in August of that season and was still bothered the next season but he'll have more time to recover now.

"It's a tough loss for us and a tough loss for the kid," said Melvin. "He worked so hard at his game and was so mentally strong. I'm so disappointed for him personally, putting aside the team.

"He's one of my favorite players because of the energy he brings to the team. I always look forward to the start of the game to see what Rickie is going to do. I think he's one of the more exciting leadoff hitters in the game."

Melvin said he wasn't sure yet which player would come up from the minors to replace Weeks on the roster. In tonight's game against St. Louis, Craig Counsell is playing second and rookie Mat Gamel is making his first start at third base.

Melvin and head trainer Roger Caplinger said preparation was being made for Weeks to have surgery Wednesday in Phoenix by specialist Don Sheridan. Sheridan repaired his right wrist injury in 2006 as well as a torn thumb tendon in 2005.

Caplinger said there was no known medical reason for Weeks having the same injury in both wrists.

"Dr. Sheridan said he never had a patient who had that in both wrists," said Caplinger.

"Basically, it's Rickie being Rickie. He has very strong hands and wrists and has a lot of bat speed with torque."

One option to bring up from the minors is 2B Hernan Iribarren, who is batting .311 at Class AAA Nashville. But whomever comes out will not be a regular player. Melvin said he'd have a replacement by game time tomorrow in Houston.

Melvin did say that shortstop prospect Alcides Escobar would begin to get some action at second base at Nashville in the event there is another injury. But Melvin said Escobar would not be coming up now.

For the present, Counsell will handle the bulk of the duty at second with right-handed-hitting Casey McGehee getting some starts against lefties.

Weeks was an integral part of a team that has won 19 of 24 games to move into first place in the NL Central. He was considered an underachiever in the past but improved himself offensively and defensively through hard work.

"Rickie always believed in himself," said Melvin. "He was on pace for 100 runs and 100 RBI. He's a big part of our clubhouse chemistry. I consider him a blue-collar guy as a player.

"I told him to keep his chin up. He knew it was something serious yesterday. When the doctor touched it, it was very sensitive."

Tom Haudricourt reported something to the effect of -- Dr. Sheridan had never seen the same torn tendon sheath in the same person in different wrists.

Real bummer over here right now, as we have no real starter at 2B and no real leadoff guy.

This is a huge blow to the team, but I think leadoff should now go to Hart. He has the speed and power, I think he would make a fine adjustment to leadoff, it's not like he has never done it before. Bat Councell 2nd and put Gamel towards the end until he can prove he can hit higher in the order. Councell doesn't hit for power, but he can get on base. Will be nice to see Gamel get his shot, hopefully he can provide some pop as well as defense.

This most likely means it's a genetic/anatomic/chronic problem with Weeks' wrists and will prevent him from ever being truly healthy, unless he gets a Luke Skywalker-type wrist implant like in The Empire Strikes Back.
I'm not a doctor, I just play one on the internets.

I was just starting to regret moving my Weeks lot to topnotch; now it looks like he'll have to shoulder the burden of sitting on a Weeks stash, the most frustrating stash in sports. Oh well, at least he got them on the cheap.

I feel for Rickie. I have had high hopes him this season, and he looked like he was gonna come thru.

I've always kind of been a Weeks apologist, so this hurts. At least at this point, he'll get sympathy from the fans. As opposed to, say, when Ben Sheets would annually get hurt.

The only silver lining here might be that my oldest prospecting guy may finally see a good chance to prove himself; that being Hernan Iribarren.

Will we see Ray Durham back?

No, my gut says it's Counsell's job now and that Hernen Iribarren will be brought up for depth.

Looks like Alcides Escobar might be transformed into a 2B-man. He was moved there tonight.

He promptly went 2/4 while scoring 3 runs, including the game winner.
