Re: 2009 BOWMAN DRAFT PICKS & PROSPECTS PICS AND PRELIMINARY CL

I see the incomparable Mr. Keen is signed in.

Care to weigh in, Jason?

No topic such as this would be complete without his analysis.

Yikes, not a good first impression. Some decent cards for me to chase, mainly Ryan Jackson, his first non USA card. Also first cards of Raymond Fuentes and Seth Schwindenhammer, two top sox draft picks. Surprised to not see a single recently drafted Cane though. Maybe in BS

Re: 2009 BOWMAN DRAFT PICKS & PROSPECTS PICS AND PRELIMINARY CL

The base set is obviously weak, although I like that they extended it to 75 cards. The same thing happened in 2007 when the checklist was first released, so I think we'll see widespread changes by the time the product is released (if not, then this product is pretty much garbage).

Not a fan of the WBC cards - won't go into further detail on that, since that seems to be the general consensus.

The Auto checklist is solid, but it's hard to tell at this point whether we have any future superstars in that group. The checklist is larger than last year, there aren't any huge stars at this point (versus last year when we had Flores, Montero, Stanton, Beckham, etc.), and there are more scrub autos than last year (Bashore, Jenkins, Boxberger, several others as well - not that they won't be decent players, but at this point in time, I wouldn't be too excited pulling them).

I don't see any auto that will sell for more than $20 once prices settle and that's not a good thing.

Overall, the lack of any potential near-term superstars (there are a lot of solid HS guys that could develop into stars, but no one that would be a top 20 prospect at this point) is a problem - if Topps can't get any of the Boras guys, that will make it even more difficult to have a few big Autos to chase, so it'd be nice if they would dip into the prospect pool to get a few big names like they did last year (although I'm not sure who's even out there).

Really, from this past draft, the only guys that I would think would sell in that $40+ range would be Strasburg and Ackley, maybe Tate. So Topps is kind of pigeonholed unless they put guys that are prospects from previous drafts/international players in the Auto set. It's really just a lacklaster draft in terms of hobby superstars at this point in time. That's not to say it won't be a good draft in the long run, but with a lot of HS talent in the 1st round, we won't know for a few years what we have here.

All that adds up to a product that, if Topps makes some changes, could be a nice product in the long-run, but I'm not sure the break value will be very good this year. There just aren't enough hyped-up guys in the set at the moment or in this draft.

I guess we'll have to wait and see what Topps is able to do before the checklist is finalized, so it's still too early to pass judgment, but I think that if Topps can't get any Boras players and doesn't add any other prospects, this product will be very average, at least initially, with some potential down the road if some guys hit it big.

I didn't do very well on last year's product and this one looks weaker, so I'm not sure I see a lot of value at this time. I don't think I'd pay close to $600 for a 12 box case of this product, but with a lot of changes, that might be more reasonable.

JP - do you have a list of all of the potential AFLAC cards we could see? That would help this product out, but I guess we're stuck with guys in this year's draft (rather than last year, when they had guys from previous years, such as Heyward and Freeman, which was really nice). So those probably won't be as big of a bonus as last year either.

I don't have a list in front of me, but I do know of a couple of names off the top of my head who weren't in 2008 BDP's AFLAC Auto checklist:

Robert Stock (is a base card here, so he's likely to be included)
Brooks Pounders (ditto)
D.J. LeMahieu

Too bad Aaron Hicks is Razor exclusive, or he'd be a good addition as well.

...and people are pissed about 2009 BC being weak.

I have noticed that the Bowman Products go in cycles.

2006 Bowman Chrome - Weak -
2006 Bowman Draft - Very Strong (Great Autos / FYC)
2007 Bowman Chrome - Very Strong (Huge Autos)
2007 Bowman Draft - Moderate (Weak Autos / Great FYC)
2008 Bowman Chrome - Very Weak (Terrible Collation / Auto Checklist Huge)
2008 Bowman Draft - Very Strong (Great prospects and Autos)
2009 Bowman Chrome - All signs point to being a Moderate to Strong product
2009 Bowman Draft - First glimpse - very weak

What do you see in 2009 BC that gives you the impression of Moderate to Strong? My impression of the CL is that it is VERY VERY WEAK.

Jared Mitchell is also a candidate for an AFLAC card.

They just dropped and the morons will pay high outta the gate everytime. In 2 months these autos will be cheap. This product is moderate to crap.

Check out the secondary market sales of Tommy Hanson, Santana, and Freeman. Each of them getting around $50 per, and that is just preliminary sales.

Mitchell didn't play in the AFLAC game. You must be thinking of someone else.

Just remembered Matzek as well. Duh.

This is true, but Topps didn't make a card of him. Unless he was an unintentional "error" card found in base Bowman sealed sets.

True. They were player issued. They had pictures of it in the local paper.

At this point, the only Yankees card in the whole set is Derek Jeter. ::facepalm::

(please correct me if I'm wrong).

Jeter not in BDP. If you're talking about all 2009 Bowman issues Pat Venditte off the top of my head is a Yankee.

Maybe I am bias towards the product since I am a collector of one of the FYC autos.

Only time can tell us how well the product fairs, for me, I would be thrilled with pulling most of the players from the Auto checklist.

I just wanted to point out that the term is "biased", not bias. It's an error that is made quite a bit on these boards and nobody ever points it out. I'm not trying to call you out, but if I make a mistake I want somebody to let me know so I don't repeat that mistake.

I did a case each of the last two years. None this year though.

Sorry for the confusion. I meant that Jeter's WBC card is the only "Yankee" player in the whole set. No Yankee rookies...no Yankee prospects to be found in this checklist.

Clearly you didn't read the article where it says Jeter is in the set.
