Will Clark and Mark Grace leap to mind along with Gwynn

BEST hitter of the 90's, not good hitters of the 90's.

Mark Grace had more hits than anyone in the 90's. How is that not valued?

Not saying he wasn't good, but he's FAR from the best of the 90's. For a guy w/ the most hits in the 90's (your case for him), his career best OBS was 409, & he only eclipsed the 400 mark 3 times in his career. Best finish in MVP voting was 13th.
What does any of that have to do with hitting?

I thought this would be pretty simple. Shouldn't the best hitter of any time period be the player with the most hits in said time period?

well then Ichiro would be the be hitter of the 00s, but we all know Pujols was way better.

As far as this discussion goes, nobody said player. Title of the thread said hitter.

you have to take into account the at bats needed to get the totals.. go by average and the list will probably flip flop a little bit over total hits. Gwynn will still be near the top regardless. but then there is the debate as to most feared hitter in the list.. who you wouldn't want to pitch to or be forced to face day in and out.. and a couple of the guys like Gwynn wouldn't hurt you in that department since they were contact hitters not power hitters. its just another discussion that even the numbers can't tell the whole story on.

whoops fixed, thanks. I meant hitter.
and to take that one further he did he over 2000 hits in 9 and wasnt really the best "hitter" of that decade, so I dont know how 1700 could be best for any other.

either way, it all depends on how much you value power

Thomas and Griffey, Puckett was injured out and out before 96, Gwynn Ripken, McGriff, Walker, Biggio were all big bats.

Really? Hard to tell if some of you guys are joking or not. Isn't getting on base & scoring runs the point of hitting? Hell, why keep track of any other stat other than hits if that's the stat we use to determine if a batter is any good?

Batter A gets 193 hits in 594 AB's. Manages to hit 14 HRs & drive in 98 runs that same year.
Batter B only manages to get 184 hits despite having less AB's (527). This inferior hitter (by your standards) hits 40 HR's & drives in 134 runs.

So, since batter A has 9 more hits than batter B...that makes him a better hitter? ::facepalm::

Well, I guess it really depends on what the OP was asking.

I didn't see any mention of HRs or RBIs or OPS+ or VORP or MVP trophies.

Title of the thread says "best hitter of the 90's"

To me that would either be the guy with the most hits, or the guy with the highest batting avg.

If you want to talk about the best power hitter of the 90's, there's a simple solution.

Start another thread.

To me, it would be the guy I would want at the plate if I needed a hit. That would be Frank Thomas. Of course, if Frank were at said plate, he would probably be intentionally walked. Gwynn was a GREAT hitter, but Frank was a GREAT hitter with power to boot.

OP asked for the best hitter, not the guy w/ the most hits. So is it the guy w/ the most hits (your original argument), or the guy w/ the highest average?

Here is your "best hitter of the 90's" yearly ranking in batting average. For a guy w/ very little HR power, & cracked the top 10 in average just 20% of the time I really don't see how you can put him anywhere close to being the best hitter of the 90's.

90:10th
91:59th
92:18th
93:9th
94:52nd
95:9th
96:10th
97:14th
98:35th
99:35th

Reading comprehension is at an all time low.
Just because somebody doesn't agree with your opinion doesn't mean that they didn't read and understand it.
It has nothing to do with my opinion. The title of the ******* thread says "best HITTER".

Not "best POWER hitter". Not "guy most likely to get on base". Not "clutch RBI guy".

Two words.

Best

Hitter

just so you know, when people are talking about the guy with the most bombs then generally that would be best "power" hitter, and most hits best "contact" hitter.

somewhere along the line instead of best "overall" hitter it as just become best hitter, aka best pure guy at the plate.
