It's kinda like the A's having Holliday for 1/2 a year and then getting prospects for him. If Seattle had offered what they gave up to get Lee to Texas for Smoak, it would have been a hang-up call. Also, overall, Justin Smoak is probably way better than Montero, if you want to view it that way.

Also, he should put up like 60 doubles a year in that stadium.

Still, I'm interested to find out exactly why the Mariners pulled out of the NYY deal. And why send him in the division? I know it's highly unlikely he'll resign in Texas, but still a little curious.

they must be positive of Texas $$$ situation and the fact that its a rental for sure. if so that would mean nothing to the Ms this year as this year is already lost.

hopefully we can see French again and get some young guys playing time.

At this stage of the deal(without knowing how these guys pan out), this has to go down as one of the worst deals in history(from the Mariners standpoint).

How did the Rangers not give up Holland, Martin Perez, Jurickson Profar, etc?

One of the worst deals in history? Wow. Definitely disagree. I'd say this is a better haul than two picks in the next draft, as deep as it is looking, and I'm guessing this was the best available deal. I would have been shocked, while also giddy, if the M's would have landed Holland or Perez in addition to Smoak, and Profar, while a very good prospect, is a long ways off.

The more I think about it, I exaggerated a bit.

Not one of the worst in history, sorry. But, I still say this was a poor decision by the Mariners, quite a bad one really.

Sure-they didn't give up that much to get him-that isn't the point. They had people banging on the door for Lee, so there is no excuse to get what they did back for him. Had this been July 31st, ok-but it's July 9th. Why the rush? If you deal him right now, you should get a better package ideally.

I definitely disagree with those saying they didn't give up much so they are better now. Sure, they are. But come on, you MUST maximize the chance you have with Lee-not many times do you get the chance to bolster your future like the Mariners had. So they added a back of the rotation starter(maybe?) and a good 1B prospect

IMO, they should have waited to see what else was out there. What if Minnesota got desperate, or Philly, or whoever else. Just pulled the trigger too soon, with not enough coming their way in the deal IMO.

Not everyone can hit close to .280 in their rookie year like Tyler Colvin.

All kidding aside, this seems like a decent trade for both sides. Texas gets the pitching they were looking for while also clearing up the log jam that they had between AAA and the Big Team. Davis comes up, and they can possibly use of their many catchers and develop them into a first baseman if they choose. Seattle gets some prospects for their system as well as a solid foundation piece of the future at 1st base.

Seems like a lot of people don't understand that you often don't need to pay as much for a rental. Smoak's no joke, though, obviously.

Crazy that a pitcher as good as Lee has now pitched for four teams in a calendar year.

But you're assuming there was a better deal to be had, what evidence of that is there? If Lee had a year left on his deal then I'd agree with you that this was disappointing, but he's a rental, albeit a great rental.

Good thing no Mariner fans agree with you.

We are THRILLED to get Smoak.

It's amazing how people think it's dumb for Seattle to trade in the division. If Lee had 3 years left, that's one thing. The M's knew they couldn't compete this season so all we did was WEAKEN Texas for the future. Their 1st baseman that they controlled for 6 years is now a Mariner, and the M's (who have already admitted defeat this season) get to face Cliff Lee for 3 more months in their division before he signs elsewhere.

Lee will not resign with Texas. The M's win because all we did was weaken a division rival for the future as we improved our own teams future.

I hope that if the Yankees don't sign Lee in the offseason, the new Rangers Owners resign Lee to a six year contract and screw over the Mariners for that time period.

It would make the Mariners look even dumber than they already do now.

The advent of the Internet has obviously provided us with wonderful opportunities and advancements. But when I realize that it also gives people like you a public forum to voice their complete and utter idiocy, I really wonder if it's all worth it.

so basically I view the trade like this:

Mariners: Justin Smoak & Blake Beavan plus money saved plus thank you cards from the Red Sox and Rays.

Rangers: Lee and the removal of a clubhouse cancer with Lowe

Plus, we possible get to see Pinata tonight.
So true

I like it..

With the way the M's have been playing this year, Lee probably wouldn't have signed another contract.. It's not the first time the M's have lost a quality pitcher..

Rangers Get a Little Help
By KEN BELSON AND RICHARD SANDOMIR

The Texas Rangers might want to thank the other 29 major league teams for helping them land Cliff Lee from the Seattle Mariners.

The debt-laden Rangers, who voluntarily pushed themselves into bankruptcy in May, received an $18.5 million loan from Major League Baseball last year to help them cover their operating expenses, including player salaries.

As part of a long and bitter battle to sell the Rangers, Major League Baseball lent the team an additional $21.5 million in May, matching a similar offer from the team’s creditors.

Some executives at other teams are upset that they are effectively enabling the first-place Rangers to get one of the top pitchers in baseball.

“The Rangers are acting as if they can go out and spend money,” said one baseball executive. “They’re attempting to try and spend money they don’t have for players.”

Lee signed a $9 million contract with the Mariners in the off-season. With just over half the season over, he is owed about $4 million for the rest of the season. The Rangers, though, are believed to have received $2.5 million from Seattle. The Rangers are in bankruptcy court, so the portion of Lee’s salary they will pay had to fall within their existing budget.

“We were not in a position where we had to exceed budget, so it wasn’t an issue,” said Jon Daniels, the Rangers’ general manager.

Sour grapes and BS. The Rangers paid for the raise in payroll with prospects. The Rangers weren't going to do the deal unless they got money back and Seattle wasn't going to do it without Smoak.

Justin is a good kid and Seattle fans will be glad to have him. I wish him the best in Seattle and am glad to see the Rangers make a gutsy move.

I have been watching smoak all year and he has been a let down to say the least. He could turn out the be great, but from what I have seen, that isnt going to happen.

I love the fact that the rangers get a star, for average players, even if for only the rest of the year.

Also if the team sale goes through, we may be able to sign him for next year. Assuming the rangers make the playoffs this should only help to pay off their debts. I am happy with the trade and cant wait to see him replace harden as the ace.

I'm not a big prospector, but is Beltre still in the top tier for them as players on the rise? He sure seemed like he would be a good player last I checked.
