Do you tip your mailperson for Christmas

I think one of the problems here is that you called it a tip. I consider it to be a Christmas gift.

I don't mean the mail guys. I mean anybody who thinks that it's unbelievable that mailpeople are owed a tip is unbelievable to me. Especially once I saw that the guy makes as much as he does that delivers ripped mail to me.

Around here, the mail carriers make as much as the average household. I'm not saying their living large in mansions, but they are better off than most of the families they deliver to.

I did say before that I would tip him still if he did his job better, even though he brings in more than I do.

The paper guys is somebody I think earns a tip. He does the same thing as the mail carriers (although not the same hours), and he has never been late and we've never been missed on a delivery. I know it's their secondary job most times, but still.

Clearly no one is saying they tip their mail deliverer if they do a crappy job. Just like any time you tip, it has to be earned.

The guys that pick up my trash do their job also. They work in the cold. I don't tip them either. Do you tip your trash man?

The streets here are clean, I'm not hunting those guys down.

The neighborhood park is in good condition year round. I'm not tipping those guys either.

I'm not saying you should tip them. My guy goes out of his way and delivers my mail to my door in an apartment building. There are 10 apartments, and I'm the only one he does this for. Wanna know why. lol If they go out of their way or you never have problems, they deserve something, even if it's just a card. A server brings you food and beverages, and you tip them. These people bust their butts every single day bringing you your stuff through all types of weather and you find it crazy to give him even $5 a year and a card. Clearly it's not a requirement, but a nice gesture none the less.

I never "tipped" my postman (he no longer is on the route, medical issues) but I ALWAYS gave him a "Christmas present", gift cards to local restaurants and such. Here is why, if he had a package for me that would not fit in the mailbox, or need to be signed for, he would call me on my cell to see if I wanted to meet him to pick it up (I worked 7 mins from home), or if I cared if he just signed for it and put it in the box. He went way above and beyond his duties for me. He knew the shat I had coming in were valuable and took extra special care of making sure I got my stuff. He never expect a gift or tip, but was clearly thankful when he got his Christmas present. Was a really good guy, miss him.

I really don't see a comparison between a waitress that makes $3.65 per hour (before tips) to a mail carrier that makes nearly $25 per hour plus benefits. The laundry list of people to tip continued to expand every year....well, until last year. The downturn in the economy has changed people's attitudes towards money. This is reflected in the significant decline the price of everything from sports cards to houses.

I don't think the failure to tip the mail carrier makes someone cheap. It is a matter of choice because the salary of a mailer carrier is not structured to be tip dependent. The same goes for teachers, I will schools would adopt a no gift policy. Many large companies have rules in place the limit or prohibit accepting gifts from suppliers or vendors so it is not unusual.

Finally, I wonder how much the difference in opinions on tipping the mail carrier has to do with the part of the county you live?

Definitely a matter of perception. I guess I could have worded it differently, but it's the same outcome. I would also consider it a gift and not a tip.
